Just a heads up, I said in chat with Amex “ I am thinking about cancelling my card” just trying to see if there would be a retention offer. Their response was “sorry to hear that” I will now cancel your card”. I was pretty taken aback since I spent over $250,000 on my platinum card the past year. I did not respond and called in to speak with a rep. The rep told me there wasn’t a retention offer and would I like to keep or cancel. I said I would keep the card. Comes 2am and I get a notification that my card has been canceled. Apparently the chat person took it upon themselves to go ahead and cancel the card even though when they asked to confirm I replied I will take care of it on the phone. I called first thing in the morning to have it reinstated and they said it would have to go through a process that will take 7-10 days and it would cost me $25. It’s been 5 days and they have not reinstated it but I do have an offer to upgrade my gold to platinum. All payments were made on time ($20-$40k a month) and on my app says card is cancelled with a current balance of -643.18 because I over paid on it. I guess. Phone rep said no retention until 13th month. Pretty sad about it

Them: "I'm hoping to buy a house in the San Francisco Bay Area soon with my low paying job."

Me: "Do you have a good credit score? Do you have any credit cards?"

Them: "I don't know what it is, I never checked, I don't have any credit cards."

Family and friends are afraid of credit cards because they equate them with debt but, people in my part of the legal community are into this hobby or don’t want to engage in the hobby because they think it’s too much work on top of their other activities. I think that this hobby fits perfectly with the way lawyers think and when I retire next summer I’ll have more time to take advantage of it. Thanks for the entertaining video!

Hey guys. Have a Merry Christmas. Any chance we can meet the families? Some sound funny. My mom is coming around but used to think I was going in debt. A friend told me "They are going to kick you out." when I was a few cards in.

Should you run both the Amex platinum and Chase sapphire reserve? Or is that counter productive?

Merry Christmas Sebastian. My first time commenting but have been benefiting from your videos for a long time, so thank you! I can totally relate to this video, specifically I get a lot of friends who gawk and say they are jealous of the business class flights ive been able to book with points, but I can tell they wouldn't even take the first step by signing up for the right cards. And there are definitely the judgemental bunch like im killing my credit score but the response is easy: *here's my credit score*, here are all the cards I have open, here's what I get out of them (usually comes in form of pics of biz class flights, free hotels, and lounges), and I def am not in credit card debt. Then i add that this is what i do and they can do whatever they want to do. I welcome a "challenge" and we can compare our financial habits to see who has faired better in terms of paying back student loans, mortgage, total remaining debt, retirement savings, income, etc. And they usually shut up after that 😝

There’s also a book called The Millionaire Next Door. To summarize a lot of wealthy live in same houses as middle class, drive same cars with maybe one upper tier, dress like middle class, etc. A millionaire could be your neighbor hence the title. They’re not rich because they spend money.. they’re rich because they save it and are financially smart unlike most retired NFL players.

Hey seb I have looked online and have not really found a great credit card for trips to Disney I have 2 young kids and currently have the csr I know chase (at least used to ) offer direct booking to Disney but the prices are about double anywhere else so not a good use of points. The other problem is we stay on site at Disney hotels so any card I look at is kind of garbage because they are all based on off property hotels have you seen anything I am missing I am getting the chase freedom the first week of January so I can get the point from that but other than paying for airfare I don’t see any good cards for this purpose

100% of my friends and family when they hear I have 10 credit cards (except my bro who also plays the game), "wtf are you insane?"

My family thinks the more credit cards you have the debt you have. My friends ignores credit because she defaulted on her loans.

I tell people, "Some people spend time on fantasy sports and often lose. I spend time managing my credit card points, and always come out ahead!"

And Seb, you're much too nice about the "Luxury" cards lol! They are useless expensive junk for the broke "New York" guy in the cartoon you showed. Basically, they are cards for poseurs – the type who would flex their Platinum card at a restaurant instead of using a card with a better restaurant bonus. I don't anybody other than my computer screen ever sees my Platinum card since I only use it for air fare and the occasional hotel (if I'm willing to prepay through Amex Travel for the 5X).

Anyway, thanks for the fun holiday vid!

No°11, poeple who think their card limit is how much they have available to spend, basically thinking of it no differently than money in their bank account.

Reply
Archy Grey December 28, 2019 - 9:07 am

My card has an $8500 limit, I've never used more than $500 at any one time on it. You'd be surprised that there are poeple who don't get why i don't max it out because its "free money".

Askhole- great vocabulary word. I looked it up and it is in the urban dictionary- A person who constantly asks for your advice, yet ALWAYS does the complete opposite of what you told them to do. A person who constantly asks for your advice, yet ALWAYS does the complete opposite of what you told them to do. A corollary to that- Askholes do not seek help from you. Askholes try to find weaknesses in your advice to prove you wrong. They literally keep "ask"ing you to try to find faults and put you into a "hole". Hence, askhole.

Logan Price December 29, 2019 - 5:38 am

I ALWAYS have friends and family saying "having all those cards is bad for your credit score" so I just explain why its actually the opposite and most understand as long as you keep it short and simple. just don't be an askhole

I hate it when cards change. All that work and effort when I only have 3 cards and say the Uber Card changes when I was putting a fair bit on the card. Now I have to figure out where to go. When I can hit the spending for another card.

I run into people who only know of credits from the stores that offer them when they are making a big purchase like people who only have Lowe’s or Best Buy cards. Every time I find a person with a credit one card I always get so tempted to talk them out of it XD or ask why they got that card.
