In this video, we’re going to look at the 5 best credit cards to consider for people new to the credit card game.

For a lot of you, this probably leans towards cash back since it’s easy to understand. If you want to bonus hunt — so those $200 for $500 spend type offers — or if you’re travel focused and want to do cool trips then that’s also a bit different as well.

Also, just because we’re talking about 5 cards doesn’t mean you need to get all 5. A lot of people might pick one and then build the relevant system around that card.

If I have the Citi Double cash back could I upgrade it to the Citi Custom Cashback? If I can, would I just miss out on the sign up bonus?

What if I get the Citi Custom Cash and only decide to use it to purchase gas, will I still receive the 5% on that spend?

Hmmm…top 5 huh?
1. Discover IT
2. Chase Freedom Flex
3. US Bank Cash+
4. Chase Amazon Prime
5. Citi Custom Cash Card (C4)
Current quarter the IT would be on 5% fuel duty, CFF would be taking care of anything from home improvement stores @ 5x, plus dining and pharmacy purchases @ 3x, and my cell phone plan (only 1x but great insurance), Cash+ would be getting me 5% back on home utilities and Streaming/ISP fees, Amazon card getting me 5x on the majority of my online shopping, and the C4 pulling 5x grocery duty.

Next quarter the Cash+ and Amazon cards would stay the same. The IT would take over Dining at 5%, CFF would take over groceries at 5x (and still do the 3x on Pharmacies and 1x plus insurance on my cell), and the C4 would swap over to 5x on Fuel.

The addition of the C4 really does make those 5%/5x rotation/election cards even more valuable. And while the Amazon card is pretty narrowly focused, I spend a fair amount with Amazon and since it has no foreign transaction fees and passable travel protections…can be my primary traveling card when necessary. If we expanded to 7 cards I think adding the Altitude GO to this mix makes sense…and possibly the SavorOne as well (to prop up the quarters that dining and groceries aren’t one of the IT or CFF’s categories.

Hey Sebby, I saw online that Amazon was considering breaking off from Chase with the Prime Rewards card. Have you heard this also?

hey sebi, are there any cards whose cashback is in bitcoin? or would you steer clear of those?

Dang, that's some craptastic advice.. lol.. If new to credit and @ all possible, try to get a Credit Union credit card and stay away from the cash/rewards credit cards( higher interest rates).
I have all the freedom, apple, Amex, store, jewelry, etc but no discovery. The best card by far is NFCU platinum card (no annual fees an rates starting @ 5.99%) Best thing about credit union credit cards, you can switch between cards without having to do a new credit application.

When did the US Bank Cash+ become a beginner's card? I heard it's really hard to get. How many years of credit card history do you need to have?

Reply
Sami Mohammad June 23, 2021 - 1:29 pm

US bank never approves beginners! Don't waste inquiry on that.

Can you do a video on the Carnival Credit card? I think it’s horrible but there’s so many people who are diehard card holders. I’d like to see why I’m wrong or be able to explain to them why they are.

I’m probably going to just get this card for gas only. The Sapphire preffered doesn’t consider gas as travel so would this be a good idea?

Reply
Andrew Bolland June 24, 2021 - 11:23 pm

I would have added the PNC Cash Rewards Visa Credit Card. 4% gas, 3% restaurants/fast food, 2% groceries, and 1% everything else.

I just received a offer from csp. I have no cards through chase and no banking relationship. I have the credit score needed for the card and I have 0 inquiries thru Experian. Is it a good idea to apply for this card as a first chase card ?

Hi Sebby. Luv your content. Quick question about tax liens that you mentioned. I thought that creditors no longer considered tax liens as they no longer show on credit reports. Is this not the case?

Do Target and Wal-Mart count as department stores? Because that’s a category for some cards. I also know that Discover covers their websites seasonally.
