A super card with all benefits? 🤔 Depends on that sign up bonus! Still the concept kinda sounds like a fully loaded Zync card. Maybe it's time for a comeback-

"Moving away from that awkwardness…" 😂 Let's keep it awkward! Don't know about my favorite emoji but most used lately is 🥶 since I'm in the Northeast USA. Trying to earn those points for more ☀️🏝️🏖️.

The only AMEX I currently have is the Zync, it's rewards are horrible but it's a unicorn so I hold on to it. Still early in the game, working through Chase at the moment, SW Priority, come on Companion Pass!

I would really be interested in a super card from American Express to simplify the process of earning points even if the annual fee was $1500 as long as it offers more and better benefits compared to the platinum card. The super card could be a good fit positioning itself between the platinum and the centurion cards.

Important note on the surpass and hilton business…. the welcome bonus is now 130k points PLUS a free night. I think this is kind of a game changer for year 1 value and is a strong case against upgrading or downgrading to the surpass vs just applying for the card outright.

Super card – yes, if it’s a true value replacement for 3-4 cards.

I got my Gold card, and if I ever decide I don't want it, I still have the Zync Card with the $25 annual fee, which is a cheaper alternative with grandfathered Amex points.

I'm honestly surprised AMEX has NOT entertained the idea of a "super" card (at least, one that is publicly available). It feels like that would be a middle ground between their Platinum and Centurion cards, while furthering AMEX's appeal as THE traveller's credit card.

I hate the Amex gold restaurant points category with a passion. I've been to restaurants and later only got X1 MR points since it was categorized as "restaurant: bars & cafe", I've also been to bars and later received X4 MR points only to find out the bar was categorized as "restaurant". The inconsistency infuriates me so much that I plan on dropping the card when my year two comes around.

Since i got the offer through resy for my AmEx green card i am getting 20% cash back on restaurant purchases for a year and getting a decent 50k mr point bonus.

For me, the appeal of the Green over the Gold and the Platinum is… it’s not a monthly coupon card that you have to stay on top of to get your money’s worth. Obviously if you’re regularly dining out at places that are included in the Gold’s dining credit and using Uber or Uber Eats all the time, it’s going to fit you like a glove and not feel like a coupon card. Personally, I value almost all the credits across the Gold, Green, and Platinum at close to zero (it’s the Amex offers that are more valuable to me), and in that scenario—the lower annual fee and ease of use of the Green matter more.

Would love to see a follow-on video to this one on the same topic but with Chase cards. 👍

For dining, Gold for Life.
Otherwise, Aspire is OP.
What did I miss with your nod to Brilliant over Aspire?
Can I even hold the Brilliant while holding the Ritz Carlton?
Better question, what do I do with my 4th Priority Pass membership?

Sebby, great video as always. For me, 1) amex gold 2) hilton aspire 3) Marriott. Though I get that it can work for others, Im not a big fan of the green card. Always just felt stuck in the middle with that card and would get it for the bonus only. Favorite food emoji 🍯

You say it's easy to use travel credits if you know what you're doing… sounds like a great idea for a video. Looks like you last covered this topic 3 years ago…

Guess AMEX hates me. I haven't put more than $500 on my Blue Cash Preferred since I've had it (going on on 4 years now), but I do have a high yield savings account with a deposit greater than the credit limit extended to me. They keep offering a $25,000 personal loan with 6.98% fee, the occasional targeted offer for the Gold, Green, and Platinum.

Green Card (I think) is a better "travel" card than the Gold Card.

I have the green card as is perfect for me. Living in the NYC is easy to earn 3x on transit, uber/lyft and restaurants. Plus the frequent travel (flight/hotels/airbnb) helps a lot. The green card is good if you live in a major city who uses public transit as your main mode of transportation. If you have a car well just in tolls and I believe parking you earn those multiplier. It would have been great if they had 3x on gas.

MY top 3 AMEX cards are 1) Platinum, 2) Gold, 3) Surpass. Platinum for "other" benefits, flights, rental cars, and flight credit. Gold is for Dining and Supermarkets (when the Freedom doesn't take over). Also I can use the Uber Eats and Grubhub credits to pickup food easily. The Surpass is a great mid-way Hilton card and my primary gas card. I have toyed with the MBB, but Marriott pisses me off when I travel for work. But the card is usable and simple. Thought about MBB or waiting a year and upgrading to Chase Ritz Card. I would consider the Aspire if I traveled more. The Delta cards are worthless to me even though I fly Delta. The free checked bags cut into the ability to use the Platinum and Aspire flight credits.
Super AMEX card, you mean the famed "Optio" card. maybe I would be interested, but the EAF would have to be low enough to bite.

My wife and I got the AMEX Gold just over a month ago and we love it. Its our daily driver. Big time foodies! Already over halfway to the welcome bonus. Would love the Platinum, but my wife would kill me with that annual fee lol.

I know Amex wants me to do the gold-platinum setup, but dies it justify the annual fees? I eat and travel a lot. It would be profitable, but is there another card holder that would help me maximize my dining spend ?

I thought I’d read you could downgrade MR cards to the Everyday (not cash) since it’s also MR. Or signup for Everyday and cancel the fee card. Are you saying we’d lose all our points?! Referring to 5:28 comment.

Great review for dining spend options in the Amex ecosystem!

In regard to an ultimate Amex card, like any other card, as long as the overall multipliers and credits work for me and offset the annual fee reasonably. As much as I would prefer an effective annual fee of zero or less, I am willing to pay a premium for simplicity and not having to juggle and figure out which card to use at any given moment. I would consider an effective annual fee of around $100 for the ultimate Amex. Optio, are you even still a thing?

jeffrey miller February 4, 2022 - 7:03 pm

Your thoughts; Amex is being super aggressive marketing it's platinum card. I can't get away from the ads on trains and banners at airports. Which is probably contributing to the Amex lounge overcrowding. With this rumored "Optio" or whatever that is somewhere in the pipeline, do you see the Platinum going the way of the Gold and being locked out of the lounge?
