The banks are not “fronting” any money. With direct deposits there is a settlement date which is the day the deposit posts to your account. The bank knows the deposit is coming two days before the settlement date. Some banks will post the deposit before the settlement date if they are confident the check will clear, though technically that’s not the best practice. What you basically described is banks cutting corners.
I've been in the same Credit Union for 10 years, do my taxes electronic for 10 years and still no money in my account.

LOL I had one coming but turbo tax messed up my account info and I guess it rejected like my tax return did and now its just floating around somewhere with no info on where it went on the 15th.. I blame this on the irs more than turbo tax.. they shouldn't have sent anything out until a week after the update my bank info thing released…. I was finally able to update it 4 days after it went missing but this may only be due to the system clearing the bank info after they sent it out..
