United Airlines and IHG have both made devaluations to their programs. The United MileagePlus devaluation happened without any notice and award tickets have already seen negative effects from this change. Then IHG also made a no notice change to introduce dynamic award pricing for their hotels. Both of these changes seen ill timed as people aren’t currently traveling.

So Steve Rodgers passed the shield to you? I'm a big Marvel fan myself.
Agreed, silly move on the end of United Airlines and IHG
United just sent me an email this AM to tell me I am soooooooo important to them, are you saying I'm not?
The credit landscape as a whole is changing forevermore now. I have more cashback cards and 2 travel cards Amex Delta Platinum SkyMiles and Usbank Altitude Reserve. I pretty much fly Delta.
I am 2/24 right now…. I had been planning on using some slots on the Chase IHG and United cards but now I'm less likely to do that.
It will be interesting to see what the rumored changes in AMEX will be this month. I now have some extra slots to use =)
hey Waller, wdym by "fly on their metal"? Fly on their own aircrafts?
Love the shirt! And thank you for pointing this out. Wouldn’t have known till the next booking.
Dude Chase will truly have nothing but Hyatt left at this point and somehow bloggers will still say Chase’s UR is most valuable. I’m personally over them at this point. Looking forward to your follow up.
Also Winter soldier captain A was the most badass!
awesome,im loving the podcast as well, please do more.
Unfortunately, from the business’ perspective, this is a PERFECT time to make massive/impactful changes to their programs because their computer systems are at minimum use during this pandemic when most folks aren’t flying or staying in hotels. Face it: awards are not going to be what they once were. 😢 Remember the glory days of award charts? Free breakfasts for all? I’m a senior citizen whose glad that I’ve traveled my entire world bucket list already from Antarctica to Zanzibar. I’m thinking of joining Team Cash-Back after I use up / gift away the balance of all my point stashes this year.
Glad I passed on the IHG card as it doesn't seem to be a long term keeper. United? Well, United is just gonna United…
Why would they do this now when no one’s hardly flying?
i find it all the more compelling to just stick to my cash back hexafexta setup..
Yet another reason why I’m glad I decided to a mainly cash back setup. Tired of these unannounced devaluations and I will be avoiding giving these companies my business in the future
How has your plans of travelling around during the pandemic going?
United is only going to temp Marriott into following their lead. Some of these companies can't resist a little post-pandemic middle finger wave at their most loyal. Looking at the comments below, and a future lean towards cash back, I'm glad that my setup quickly converted with the Charles Swchab Platinum.
Just more devaluation to Chase UR and making MR look that much sweeter. Thanks for the thorough breakdown, Dustin. Take care and stay safe!
Dammit Dustin. I just applied for the 100,000 sign on bonus for their new card this morning!!! Where was this video this morning??? Thanks for your hard work. You are diamond status to us!
United is going into survival mode. Last thing they care about right now is their rewards program. I wouldn't be surprised if all the airlines do that soon.
IHG was never worth pursuing. It's only good if you have the old card for the reward night. I wouldn't recommend pursuing them unless one already has points in their program…but even then they should be transitioning to a better program.
Chase is probably going to pull back as well. They are the most conservative bank and don't take on risk. They are probably going to take the recession as a time to clean house. This is a terrible time to be issuing credit.
This is the time to farm points with existing cards and slow down on the apps. All the banks are going to see credit seekers as a high risk right now.
Citi gets a lot of flack for getting rid of their benefits but at least they give their cardholders a decent amount of heads up.
Exactly why I don't fly United. I don't stay at IHG properties, and I've been reevaluating my relationship with Chase. The only thing with it's salt at Chase is the HYATT card. But I wish it belonged to someone else.
To play devil's advocate, I think this change right now is good for IHG.
Most people just don't want to travel this summer, even if things open up. I mean, I have no problems traveling and still plan to up until my flights this summer are cancelled.
It's my understanding that dynamic pricing could lower the point cost of a hotel based on demand. So if IHG has very low demand this year, this is a great way for them to lower pricing without looking desperate, and then they keep the dynamic pricing going forward after people figure out they're not going to die of Rona and start traveling again in the future.
United and American can go F🖕 themselves
Thanks for the info 🤔
Very informative video. Thank you!
Ok, D. I see u. Replacing Captain America? 🙂
Is it possible they're thinking "well, things can't get much worse right now" so it's the best time to make these changes that they've been wanting to make for a while? Kind of like when your wife is already mad at you, that's when you tell her you also forgot to go to the store and get milk this morning?
At the end of the day, they are businesses, and seeing how there balance sheets are taking a hit I am not surprised. AA just raised some of there baggage fees, Marriott made it harder to redeem points and earn credits, now IHG and United….not much left if you ask me and why I will never say I won’t fly them or I won’t stay there because I am going to go with the cheapest and whoever has the best availability. I am close to Dulles, which operates majority United and usually has the best prices for places I want to go so just to stop using them because of a devaluation doesn’t make sense. Devaluations will continue to happen. It’s all business.
You know the old saying it takes one to know one
This video should get more likes. Thanks for info
