Chase Sapphire Reserve Benefit Changes | Worth Keeping? – Waller’s Wallet

One of the best travel credit cards, Chase Sapphire Reserve, is having some benefits changed. The Sapphire Reserve annual fee will be increasing and there will be other “benefits” added, like Lyft and DoorDash, that will be helpful for some. But for others, this will be a Chase Sapphire Reserve devaluation.

Really clear and helpful video on these upcoming changes. It confirms to me how unwelcome these changes are in light of the big increase in annual fee and addition of benefits that are almost useless to me. I agree with you that an increase in the multipliers would have been much better, and I also would have been happy with a general dining credit that matched or exceeded any fee increase. Overall, this is a big disappointment, and I think it is likely I will downgrade to the Sapphire Preferred when I come up for renewal, thankfully not until next November.

Wanted to update: there is a 10x multiplier on Lyft rides. I find this again to be narrow in use and don’t think this truly benefit as many people. But it potentially shift people to Lyft over Uber. So we could see Uber offer something, maybe?

Remember competition means we (consumers) win

Thanks for watching, but wanted to update you all on this.

I was planning on getting the chase saphire, but now I think I might just get the amex platinum instead.

P.s. I'm a millennial and this doesnt do anything for me.

If they would of made it a unlimited 4X anywhere card I could see keeping it . I’m sorry but I’ll be downgrading 🥺

Amex partnered with GrubHub and Uber. Chase has partnered with DoorDash and Lyft.

Amex platinum card still way better. Because of transfer partners

I wish they would include Hyatt status upgrade. So if you have the Hyatt card and the CSR you would get top tier status at Hyatt.

Garbage updates. They do nothing for me. I love travel benefits and $300 easy credits but still… $550 is a hard pill to swallow. I will most likely downgrade when mine hits in July. Thanks for the video Dustin!

I have 4 cards including a CFU. Building up my credit score. Saving my 5th for a CSR to multiply my points. If this does come to pass, I'll probably just pull the trigger on other premium non-Chase cards that are being offered to me at this point. I'll see….

Annoying, if I wanted ridesharing and dining credits I would go back to Amex. I got the CSR specifically because it was straightforward and had a lower AF. Doordash doesn't deliver to my home so unfortunately there's no value to justify the increase.

I'm still under 5/24 and was debating getting the CSR next but I don't travel much at all and couldn't justify getting it. With these changes I think I can safely say I'll skip it for a few years at least.

If this true I’ll downgrade it and apply for the gold card

Yawn, I was thinking of upgrading…but no more. The added ‘temporary’ benefits for an higher annual fee? I will stick with my Amex Platinum, Gold and Sapphire Preferred combo

There is no way that any survey said this was favorable to CSR holders. Doordash and Lyft must have paid a pretty penny for this.

I never use Lyft, and the 3x on dining is not that great since I get 4X using my gold Amex card. The only thing the Reserve card gives me is the 1.5x versus the lower Preferred card. However, I rarely use make reservations on the Chase portal anyway. I will have no choice but to let the Reserve card go.

Was holding my last slot in the 5/24 rule for the CSR. Doesn’t make sense for me now as I live in a semi rural area where I wouldn’t use Lyft nor the Doordash service. Think I will get the CSP for the points then downgrade after the first year to a no annual fee Freedom card.

20/month to 25/month. plus the Lyft subscription is another 20/month alone … So the card effectively communicate increased in price by well over 100% unless I'm mistaken. And for something you are not even guaranteed (you will) to be able to get the full benefit from. That's very uncomfortable (idea). And it makes the card even harder to use.

First off, nice haircut my man. Lookin' handsome.
Second, they need to stop trying to compete with American Express its starting to look pathetic. All they do is copy them. At the end of the day we all know Amex is the legendary upperclass credit card market. Chase is a bank that is trying to branch out with NO ORIGINAL IDEAS OF THEIR OWN.

I'm beginning to consider cancelling my CSR now, I initially got it to get United points but seeing how United's service has dwindled down a lot, Delta is my new favorite airline. I really hope they add Delta as a partner because I am not liking the extra fees and not even using United anymore. For that price I am leaning more towards the AMEX platinum or getting the Delta Platinum.

My prediction is, unless they change the multipliers, they will have lots of folks downgrade to the CSP or even the Freedom. I think that depending on you are, this will make the Altitude Reserve an even more appealing card.

I've been a fan of the CSR since its intro to the market, but I am no fan of these changes. My AF will hit next month so I will have it for another year, since the fiance has a CSR I may downgrade to a CSP and get an Amex Platinum next year.

It already wasnt worth the fee for me and now they hiked it up even more to give even more city benefits. Uber, doordash and all that stuff doesn't exist in small towns. Taco bell is 10 min away and I have my own car.

Wow it seems like Chase wants to trim the herd by raising the annual fee ala Amex. That Wells Fargo trifecta is starting to look better every day. A watered down version but 50% bonus on airfare is a great deal.

Are the 3 months of dash pass only available on the freedom and slate cards? Or does it include the freedom unlimited as well?

Wow instead of making it better they made it worse. Horrible I would get rid of it so quick if amex was accepted more widely international

Chase totally dropped the ball I was on the fence to upgrade my CSP to the reserve glad I didn’t 👎 Amex green looks even better now

You can’t use the Lyft multiplier for gift cards, and Lyft Pink will be available for Chase Sapphire Reserve customers on 01/12/2020 according to their press brief. It will then be released to general public sometime in the middle of the year. Last I heard.

Reply
Remco S January 10, 2020 - 6:29 pm

I'm probably with the minority of people for which these updates could actually be beneficial. Okay, it's annoying that they force me to use Doordash maybe twice a year, which I would otherwise not use, but the 10X multiplier and discount on Lyft pays back the AF increase + gives positive expected value (spent $600 on Lyft last year just going to and from airports).

Ricardo Iglesias January 10, 2020 - 9:27 pm

I was interred in this card BEFORE the update. Now I’m not interested. Don’t care for Lyft or door dash. I hate exclusivity.

Reply
othitito January 10, 2020 - 9:30 pm

I use Lyft all of the time, and between Pink 15% discount and the 10x points for Lyft rides, that alone will make up the $100/year increase in fees. The DoorDash stuff is just gravy for me. Then again I'm a 29 year old living in San Francisco so I'm pretty sure I'm the target of these changes!

Does anyone know if the Lyft pink will renew every year while u pay the annual fee or do you have to pay for the membership after the first year?
