I love the CSR and value it more than the rest of the premium cards for how I am set up. I am disappointed with the new benefits as well because those credits I just don't use that much. If they had added a point per dollar for travel and dining categories that would have made me happy along with the Lyft and Doordash. I am lucky though that my annual renewal fee is due next month so I will renew and see how this year goes and possibly look at alternatives for next year. Great videos @wallerswallet !
My biggest spending comes from food. Groceries and Eating out. I know the gold has pretty much the best multipliers for this but i feel with the WF set up i could do decent with no annual fee but doesn't include groceries like the gold card. Recommendations? Maybe Amex Blue cash preferred. I'm not against annual fees i just want to make sure the value is there.
Downgrading to CSP
wow helpful info. Thanks for sharing
I would have considered the City National credit card. It's also Visa Infinite, and also had the $100 air discount, along with 3x on gas and groceries. The problem was you had to apply in branch, and bring along a ton of documents including income tax and other documentation showing what you currently make. I just read they killed almost all of these benefits a few months ago.
Hilton Aspire is another winner of this. Lounge access with a -$50 EAF. That doesn't even factor in whatever value is derived from Diamond Status.
The delivery bonus could be worth it. If it works with enough types
If you aren't flying 4+ times a year these cards aren't worth it
Great video. I think the top replacement is for people to get the US Bank Altitude Reserve.
I’m keeping the CSR because I will derive greater value from the card than I did before. I’m also going to obtain the Charles Schwab AMEX Platinum card.
Even the Amex green is looking as a good option now lol
I'm gonna use the $60 DoorDash credit and ride some scooters first then downgrade. Been looking at the Amex Plat for a while.
My comparison is $250 for the CSR vs $550 for the AMEX bc I can't really use most of their perks and AMEX is difficult to use internationally
Another nice option (if another is eligible for business cards) is the Ink Preferred. For just $95 annual fee, you still get 3x on general travel, trip cancellation and delay insurance, cell phone insurance, and more importantly, you stay with the Chase ecosystem. As for dining, the Ink Cash will get the 2x and no annual fee. Those 2 cards combined might arguably be better than the Sapphire Preferred alone (depending on lifestyle and spending habits, of course)
I don't have the CSR, but I would replace it with the Wells Fargo Propel
I'm not thrilled about the changes, but at least I have 9 months to decide what I am going to do.
As someone who's main expenses are eating out, bars, and lyft / uber, this actually is a straight upgrade to the CSR for me. Great opening point – always make sure this works for you before blindly just listening to others.
For me the 2 biggest benefits I'm trying to cover is 1. Priority pass and 2. Roadside assistance. I've already had several experiences with Amex priority pass being turned away at various priority pass locations at airports. Some airports don't have a normal lounge, just a priority pass bar or restaurant. I did just open the Altitude Reserve, but those priority passes are limited of course.
I'm thinking about getting AAA or something for roadside. Since I'm not considering Amex, seems my only 2 real options for unlimited priority pass are the CSR and the CNB Crystal. But the Crystal just got neutered. No free guests with priority pass there, and although the travel credit was bumped to 350 instead of 250/card for each you and up to 3 authorized users (potential $1000 in credits down to $350), 350 is still great for a 400 annual fee…except the credit is restricted, I'd be lucky to get AA gift cards since I can't use it for airfare directly. Plus I'm gonna keep the csp anyway and the crystal has no roadside, so I'd have to get AAA.
Oddly, despite the CSR devaluing here, it still may be the best option for me. No restrictions on travel credit, 2 free guests for priority pass with unlimited use and no location restrictions (like Amex), and it has roadside. I can just get AAA on a per month basis as needed rather than needing a full year membership.
Citi points are worthless
I just picked up the Altitude Reserve in November, I was already planning on downgrading my CSR. Seeing this change just confirms my decision. None of the new "benefits" add any value for me due to lack of availability in my area. I could probably find a way to get value from them on trips, but I would have to change my habits to do so, negating. The Altitude Reserve provides "enough" travel protections and priority pass access for my style of travel (esp since my most frequented airports don't have lounge access). Even if i occasionally have to redeem at 1cpp value (possible on Rental cars) mobile payments still yield 3% back on a lot of "non-bonus" spend.
I still don't see a better card setup that is as complete as as Chase setup. And the CSP is only an option if you know you'll be using the transfer partners and not travel portal. The extra 25% boost you get with the CSR on the portal is a huge difference and more than makes up for the higher annual fee.
I use AmEx as well (Gold and BBP) to keep my options open.
Wells Fargo is good if you just want to use your points for discount economy seat flights with the 1.5 portal and then you can get cards like the Hilton Aspire to fill in other benefits Wells Fargo is lacking like Priority Pass. But, you could be leaving a lot of money on the table just relying on the portal.
Should I still go for a chase trifecta even with the CSR increased annual fee? Or reach for a Amex trifecta
If it was such an incredible deal, why does $100 make it such a terrible deal. $100 not that much $ no mo. Keepin' it.
Very well done video and I have subscribed! I'm upset that my AF is now $100 more and since Chase is basically adding garbage benefits that only benefit urbanites I am considering all my options. On one hand I'm pretty unhappy that Chase would mess with the "perfect card" in my eyes. On the other hand I wonder if even though I don't use any of the new "benefits" the increase in AF amortized over 12 months is nearly negligible. To me, the biggest side benefit from CSR is primary CDW. If they did away with that, I'd be kissing Chase goodbye.
I ran a comparison between Chase and my cash back AmEX Trifecta with $35000 of spending distributed over the categories. Assumed no bonuses, one extra Chase user, and $1.25 for Chase points. Chase barely comes out ahead, with some discounts on the value of the perks.
This tells me it will be easy to walk away from Chase unless you fully value everything they offer and also, really work those travel points. My way can often be better with the added benefit of no work, just cash.
Ran it again with the Chase Trifecta, same results, actually a little worse for Chase.
Nice tip on that PC from a Marriott card to the Ritz!! #ByeByeBonvoy!
Thanks For This Video!! FoSho
Seems like Chase is leaving the door open for Citi and Capital One. If Citi adds similar travel protections or introduced a new premium card, it could be a huge hit to 5/24 lurkers out there. I'm waiting for the AMEX platinum to see if they respond with a historically high signup bonus just to see if they kick Chase while they're down… also definitely see the AF on it possibly rising… unless that new super premium grey AMEX shows up.
Great video! I learned so much from your video! I just posted a video recently about my Robinhood account. It linked me to your video!

Is there a way around the "must live within US Bank's footprint" rule?
I agree that the CSR changes suck, and there's a good chance I will downgrade to the CSP when my annual fee comes due (so as to maintain my ability to transfer my UR points to airlines). The Citi Prestige is an intriguing option and so far sounds like the best bet for me for replacing the CSR. Thanks for the video, Dustin–a good summary of the options.
For me, the unlimited lounge access is a really desirable benefit, though I only fly four or five round-trips per year, often with a friend. (Though I may visit two or three lounges on a single layover.) You might want to consider making a video specifically on the best travel cards for lounge access.
RIP VISA Infinite portal at 6:11. Things change so fast in this game…
AmEx Hilton Aspire + US Bank Altitude Reserve duo is probably the best combination.
