American Express is supposedly releasing a new credit card, the Amex Optio (or at least that is what people are calling it). It would be positioned above the Amex platinum and below the Amex Centurion or Amex Black Card.

Hey Ben, does keeping a 0% utilization hurt your score? I finally got down to a zero balance on my card and my points dropped

Also in Afrikaans OP-TIO means “On you” seems apt lol

If the Amex Optio will primarily be a travel card, it seems smart to postpone ‘til 2021 (US Bank seemed to have put off their Altitude Connect Card for later too) 👍✈️

Amex is not even 100% accept world wide. I’m struggle to use Amex platinum card in many counties in Europe and SE Asia. UK is probably more Amex friendly than many other places, even in the States.

Whatever happened to the Cobalt Card? I'd like that to come out, or a relaunch of the Zync Card.

Thanks for the update. I wonder if this is one of those instances where American Express will create a new card in response to a rumor like they did for the Centurion. Maybe Jerry Seinfeld can get the ball rolling again, LOL.

AMEX Optio? Why don't they follow Chase with the marketing?? like the Freedom Flex is a hell of a great name for a card… If we're paying $1500 a year, at least get the name right 😂😂

There's two possibilities for an Optio: an interpolation between the Platinum and Centurion (i.e. very travel-focused), or something in keeping with the MR-earning ladder, where travel-focused and non-travel-focused cards alternate (any of the MR credit cards and Gold are non-travel-focused). I'm thinking luxury groceries, restaurants, and event tickets, with perhaps the Platinum statuses, travel earn, and lounge access, so like super-Gold plus Platinum as the hypothetical pitch.

A travel card isn't worth launching, but a card like I've outlined could be.

If this Amex Optio card were to come out, do you think Amex would eliminate or reduce rewards on the Platinum card to get people to move up? Example like reduce the $200 airline credit to $100 or make Platinum card holders pay a "small" fee to get into the Centurion Lounge, while Optio and Black get in for free.

Hello Mr. Credit Shifu We have a couple new Amex Cards here in Canada and one of it is made of Metal and it is black. And one is in dark grey. They are both co-branded cards with Aeroplan & AirCanada. The first one is the Aeroplan which has $120 annual fee and is a charge card and is coloured grey. The premium one is called the Aeroplan Reserve with Annual fee of $599, This is a black metal card however this one is a credit card. It has some perks of the Amex Platinum. We were hoping it was the Optio but it wasn’t. You are right about the October launch.

Since we can't have Optio, Amex is working on the "Copper Charge Card", making for a better covid trifecta of Copper, Gold, and Platinum. How it will work is 1X on everything, 10X on the penny decimal of each transaction, plus a bonus of 100X on the penny decimal of your statement balance. It is coming in at $195 annual fee, with a $15 credit per month at 99 Cent Only Stores. Perks include Elite Gold membership with Choice Hotels and Priority Pass Standard.

With Chase releasing the Freedom Flex it's more pressure on Amex to refresh their perks again rather than release a new card

Reply
Reg M September 12, 2020 - 8:52 pm

Basically Amex Black Card with 3/4 the benefits and 2/3 the annual fee. Amex hoping to cash in on rich dummies.

I think Amex should go to the low to medium cost market. They always go the high end market.
Like if they have card that have retail store category, online store category, and small business category. Gives decent points for those categories.
No Foreign Fees. Option to use points for delivery service. And other good benefits.
Even if it have a considerable annual fee I probably consider getting one.

I'm not sure it makes sense to launch this year. I'm guessing that, like me, many Platinum Card users have some vague expectation the Platinum card pays for itself (or comes close enough for the individual member). This isn't one of those years. Add to that I can imagine Amex watering down the benefits of Platinum to try and get members to sign up for the new product.

HIGH END LUXURY MERCHANT AND OR RETAILERS! Let the Platinum be as it is and travel focused but if there is a new card let it be that taste of the Centurion card. I don't travel much and when i do I prefer private so more travel benefits with private jet companies and let the Amex Plat stay commercial and such. I spend ALLOT at places like Louis Vuitton ,Hermes' Gucci and Fendi and high end watches so more luxury item focused for sure. If its not more along the lines of a High End life style card I will just go for the Platinum cause right now my Everyday Blue Cash card is not making it.Luv it though but want that extra. Oh and Amex if you read these kind of post $ 1500 AF is enough $2000 if the card has a WOW Factor but other than that keep it real. Also make it heavier along with the Black card. I want to hear that clang when I lay it softly on the table and say' I will be paying with this Sir" and I want the person helping to look and smile and say "Oh Yes. Very good Sir" Now bring this card out so I can Boogie and build my resume up to get that invite to the Black Card and sit at the top of the Mountain! Smile!
