The Amex Platinum card gives 5x points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines and through Amex Travel. But now American Express is putting a yearly limit on that point earning. Just for reference the Business Platinum card has not imposed any annual limit so far.

Anyone who bumps up against the $500,000 cap should just get a second Platinum card. Get the Vanilla and the Schwab and then they can spend $1,000,000 on flights total. This life hack was free for you all!
No one is flying anyway….. I used to fly New York to London and back first class once/twice a month and I never got close to that on mine lol. Ever
wowza
lol how much was that abused that they had to put a $500,000 limit lol
With a vaccine soon flying will return soon and so will usage of the card
People on the subreddit said it probably came from private Jets getting coded incorrectly.
Also what is the plan for generation snow this winter? Are you gonna come out west or stay in NY and VT?
All you do is pay credit cards with other credit cards and repeat the cycle. It's the only way.
I don’t even think George Clooney spent 500k a year in Up In The Air.
My first thought was "who spends over $500k on flight ✈️?". Then I though about shipping companies. FedEx and UPS executives probably use up over $500k on airfaire. Thus not having that limit for the Amex Business Platinum makes sense.
Thanks.
….I think I’ll live 😂
I would just buy my own private jet instead of paying $500,000 on flights.
Bruh who is even spending $500k for flights on their personal platinum card
imagine being able to book flights at all.
Fortunately I don’t spend $500,000 per year on flights 😄✌️✈️
Dang, I wish this can actually make a difference to me
I'll take my $500,000+ to Discover It Miles.
Your theory is a good one, def they're trying to funnel unlimited spend business flyers into their own booking portal.
500k limit? Thats it im getting my own private jet.
LOL, i clicked expecting all the Amx guys to be complaining in the comments! Guess not.
My job ain’t slick lol they’ll spend that in 3 months 😂
Good information.
It Might be just the vanilla version I don’t see any limitations on the Schwab plat
If you spend more than 500k you can afford two platinums
I got to find it interesting that for people gaming the system to spend over $500,000 in Airline fare to get 5X till now, it shows that Amex is still somehow worried, no?
I understand that $500,000 is out of the stratosphere for most people. But as more and more people get these cards with more regular spending cap limit (like AmEx gold) for groceries and eating out. Will Amex start to lower those limits as well for earning? Once they deem that there giving up more money than they initially wanted to versus how much they're getting back from the consumer?
Or could be as he said, diverting money back to themsleves by getting people to only use the AmEx portal.
Imagine who was abusing this enough that they had to actually make this rule.
Is this per authorized user?
Folks wouldn’t put business airfare on the personal Platinum if Amex’s customer service wasn’t so janky to deal with when flights are cancelled and you need to change or reschedule.
So much easier to deal directly with the airlines. Amex Travel is an annoying middle man when you need to make changes quickly.
Gee, now I guess I'll just have to go to Chase Freedom Unlimited and get 5X. Wait, $500,000!!!. Ok I guess I won't be losing any sleep.
If anyone can answer this, it would be greatly appreciated! Have you (or anyone you know) used your amex platinum on venmo to send money i.e. for rent, dinners etc etc to satisfy the minimum spend?
I have been reading all sorts of different stuff and I know that amex says "no cash equivalents" or "no peer to peer" but again, I've heard some people say it actually counts as a purchase and they were able to satisfy the minimum spend that way
Let me know! Thanks 🙂
You can always get a second Platinum if you need to spend more than half a million on flights😉
Someone needs to upgrade to the centurion if you spend $500k on travel through Amex travel!
WHO WAS SPENDING THAT ON A PLATINUM?
ok so tnat limit is crazy… so who spend like a mill on flights to make amex do this lol?
If I could afford spending 500k per year on airline tickets I wouldn’t give a ***it to AMEX points
Damn it!
You scared me. I put $900 on mine in the last couple months and I thought I'd be capped…haha
If they’re setting this limit someone for sure is going above it
This sucks I’m canceling
I dunno about you but if your spending 500k per year on just flights…….. Your probably in the running for a Centurion card anyways.
What?! Guess I'll have to find another card to put my weekly first class flight to Dubai on 🙂
This legit sucks my father consulting business runs about 1.6 million on flights (First Class Multiple employees) all those sweet points gone. What if we open each version of the platinum vanilla Charles Schwab and morgan stanley?
I feel a lot people are misunderstanding the 500k. The 500k is the limit. In other words you will have 5x on flight purchased on Amex travel until you reached the limit after that 1x
It is not hey I will spend 500k to get 5x. Also note calendar year. Because if that says spend 500k to get 5x who will get that? I doubt even if you combine all the top 10 richest people they won't probably do that.
Do a video bout what cards you will use Q4 🙂 Seen a few others started with them like this dude https://youtu.be/rq8cz699wFo
look at you with the hair light!
I really wish this would affect me… But with no Amex Platinum and an average of 2 economy flights per year, I don't think so 🙂
How dare Amex jip me on points!
Wouldn't business Platinum earn 35% bonus on points transfer? Then why put that kind of expense on personal Platinum
