Called customer service and confirmed the 3X miles on grocery purchases up to $1,500 per month through 9/30/2021 works for existing cardholders (from product change) as well as new card applicants.
I’m like a year or so away from not caring about hard inquiries or 5/24 so this card isn’t for me right now but I always enjoy hearing about new cards on this channel👍🏽👍🏽

The 3 United miles per dollar on groceries is better than a poke in the eye, but I'll stick with my 5x UR on up to $12,000 in groceries from the current Freedom Flex/Freedom Unlimited signup bonus.
I'd rather get a Freedom.

Next time you might compare the Gateway card to the other United cards. The United Explorer card earns 60k miles with a $3,000 spend. There is no annual fee in the first year. I think the Explorer card is far superior in the first year.
It provides expanded saver award availability. Some flights will still have no saver availability. I am not sure how dynamic pricing impacts this benefit.
Freedom unlimited also has 5x rewards for grocery's now
They are laying off over 13000 employees. Make sure you understand this will translate to even lower customer service. I thought it would already have a free checked in bag.
What has better value the IHG new cards or this one?
I think a $1000 a month is a reasonable amount to spend on groceries. Especially if you actually wants some diversity in the meals you eat and are a bit more selective about where you source your groceries. I spend about $1200 for myself, wife, and 3 year old.

@3:34 Don't forget the Chase Freedom Flex is also doing 5x groceries back for 12 months (up to $12,000) as a SUB, so you'd be getting $1200 in value if you max it out
Ben, you have just opened the Freedom Flex, which earns 5 chase UR points per dollar at groceries up to $12k within the first year. You have said you will use it, and we all know it is more lucrative since you can transfer the points to United directly. What's up with this little story now about groceries with this United card? Why would you do that since you have a year with flex to max out?

As others have pointed out, this is useless and once again, Chase has under-cut their partner in United (much to United's chagrin–but, they'll get no sympathy from me). To apply for this card, means you have an open Chase 5/24 slot. Why waste a 5/24 slot on this "gateway" card to earn 3x on groceries for <12 months (since they give a hard end date), when I can earn 5x on groceries for 12 FULL months with a Chase Freedom Unlimited/Flex?
If I pay my purchases on this card before the statement comes and the interest is added do I still get rewards? I’ve been trying to find this out all day.
