Hey Credit Warriors, Credit Shifu here, well we have a little ICYMI story about the Amex Platinum today, oh what was that, ICYMI, it means incase you missed it, yeah I wondered what that meant when I saw it on blogs for like 2 years. Anyway, so the Amex Platinum is giving away free money to some card holders to make up for the fact that they can’t use their airline fee credit at this time. Yeah I know it’s not free money, just like the stimulus check, it comes out of your taxes anyway, this I guess you have already paid an annual fee of $550. But I just like saying free money, it’s exciting. Like this…
Now that really is free money. Give us a like for free money.
Anyway, here is the story. The Personal Amex Platinum is offering cardholders who’s renewal date falls between April 1st and December 31st 2020 a $200 travel credit, in addition to the $200 airline credit they already have. So that is a total of $400 worth of credits. For the new credit, the validity doesn’t start on April 1st, everyone would think it was just a joke. No it is valid from August 2020 to December 2021, so actually 18 months. So you have two sets of dates, your renewal date to be eligible and the validity dates.
Now this new $200 travel credit can be used for any pre-paid booking through the Amex Travel portal. Amex Travel can be used to book flights, hotels, car rentals and cruises.
Now I know what you are going to say: 2 things, 1 Amex Travel often doesn’t give you the lowest price and 2 if you book a hotel they almost always wont recognize your hotel status, like if you are a hilton gold member or whatever you wont get free breakfast like you should. That is because Amex Travel is considered a third party website, like Expedia.
Now what can I say to this guys, it is what it is, you are getting $200 for free. You could combine it with a direct booking, for example if you are going to spend three nights at a $200 per night hotel, book two nights directly and then your last night book through Amex travel and you will get the credit in your account. And when you check in, just say you have two bookings, and normally they will let you stay in the same room and recognize your status for the whole time. This worked for me at the Hilton Tel Aviv, I booked two nights through Chase and one night directly, and they still recognized my gold status for the whole time and I got lounge access etc…
Can’t say it is the same for every hotel though, but it is a work around that you can try. Now there is no word on whether this will come to the business platinum, but many Amex business card holders have received a so called “appreciation credit” come on, I can call this one free money right? It is literally money deposited in your account as a statement credit for free! And what about the Personal gold card you may ask, ah still nothing.
Anyway this whole Amex Platinum travel credit thing was first reported by Doctor of Credit when an Amex rep tipped off one of their readers before it was officially announced. But now it is official. So hat tip to them, and since we are talking about American Express, one other thing Doctor of Credit recently reported on is the fact that Amex have added a new welcome bonus spending tracker to some cardholders accounts. So if you have a new Amex card, look out for that feature in the website.
As always, please subscribe for new credit card, and personal finance tips and tricks almost every day. Thanks for watching and we will see you next time. Bye bye.

CHECK IT OUT, article on our website with more on the Amex Platinum credit as well as what Chase, Amex and Citi are doing to boost benefits during the lockdown: https://bit.ly/2WaLk5A
With regards you your introduction, the American Express Gold card's presence is a present. I would like nothing more than for Amex to never touch it. Once they start adding stuff….the Annual Fee will increase. Just leave it alone
I can confirm the AMEX sign up bonus tracker.
Not a lot of people Traveling
Freeeeeee! Can you make the video at least 10 min so I can get an extra free ad?
What if you haven't used current airline travel credit, will it trigger credit on amex travel portal?
My renewal date for the Amex Platinum card is October 2020. This will be a sweet credit to have!! I think its better to use it on a flight as an Airline will recognize your status and you will also be able to get your miles.
Like your channel and all videos , but… Stop trying to be funny mate it's pathetic!!
Poor rose gold card ))’:
At lease give gold card members some options for airline fee credit like postponing expiration date or even making gift card purchase eligible again
Yeah basically AMEX tells everyone with the Gold card that they could care less.
You have my permission—if that means anything—to use the phrase “free money” in this case! 😂🤣😂 (After all, cardholders weren’t expecting this when they signed up for the card.)
Amx platinum doesn’t give you 5x unless you book threw their porthole. So that makes the status the give you basically useless then 🤷🏼♂️. What the hell.
Oh goodie, another way for Amex to add more hoops to jump through!!!
There was a signup bonus tracker for my Delta Platinum Card when I signed up December 2019.
My renewal date is May 16, 2020, which means I qualify. So the Validity Date is August 2020. Does that mean I have to make hotel reservation AFTER August 2020? Or can I make a hotel reservation BEFORE August 2020 for a hotel stay on October 2020?
I like what one person in another post/video had suggested about the gold which was to make the $10 food credit $20 a month to make up for the $100 credit we can't use. Really sucks though with my business delta gold. The personal delta gold gets 4x and supermarkets and it being basically the same cards nothing 🙁
2:22 the only time I use the amex portal is for the fine hotels collection that would include the room upgrade, free breakfast for two, late checkout and $100 credit… This bonus would be great in that scenario
With a global pandemic where am I really traveling to?
Sound very passive aggressive/sarcastic/douchey in this video
The sign-up bonus spend tracker has been on the UK Amex site for at least a year now, interesting that the US site is only just rolling it out? How did American customers track their spending before this?
4:31 dat BEETUH tho
Forget the travel credit just give me $200 off the annual fee for my AMEX Platinum!
I called Amex about a week ago because my renewal was coming up. They gave me a retention offer of 30k MR points no minimum spend required or $300 statement credit – $2k minimum spend in 3 months.
Amex gave me a $500 statement credit as a retention offer. That was last month 04/20 for 5/20. I renew my card this upcoming bill.
As Platinum holders, we have access to FHR. Most hotels on FHR give you the option to tie in your hotel rewards membership, so you can take advantage of your membership tier while taking advantage of the $200 travel credit at the same time (along with the FHR benefits which, TBH, is sometimes better than hotel tier benefits). It's no Sapphire Reserve travel credit, but at least we have an option.
How about if you upgrade the card now, would the extra credit apply?
Hahahaha the gold gets nothing.puff
I had the track 3 months ago fir my platinum
Here in Thailand the annual fee is 35k THB (1.100 USD) and you can have up to 5 supplementary Cards with Priority Pass. Instead of Meliá Hotels Gold you will get Raddison Gold Status and Shangri-La Jade Status.
It’s fine if you travel every month.
The stimulus does not come out of your taxes for the next year
My renewal date was in March and I still received it
Interesting, this turned out to be a test case for AMEX platinum FHR credit
