It is free for veterans! All troops should get one early on. You do not have to be retired either. Currently serving or have served honorably are enough for them
The best parts of the AMEX Platinum are the lounge access & the 5X points for buying flights. It would an even better card if the credits were annual credits instead of monthly installments, so you could max them out on one or two big trips.
