I've been in "POP UP JAIL" since about August when I was trying to get the Marriot business card, and I still am after I got the same pop up a few weeks ago (mid November) tryin to get the 100k amex plat. However, I have a Delta account and they sent me an email offer with the Delta gold business card 70k 3mo + $100 back after $200. I applied and got accepted with bonus intact. With that being said, this points to Amex partner offers as a way to bypass pop up jail. Again, I'm still in PUJ and have been since August, but got accepted for Delta gold business through an emailed offer. I'd say make an account with many airlines and hotels in the hopes they serendipitously send you these things.

I’m currently in amex jail. About a month ago, I wanted to get the everyday card as a safe haven for my MR points if I were to close my gold card and got the pop up. I’ve started using my blue cash at gas stations and might try again for the everyday around Christmas time.

I’m not in jail, but my wife is. We have closed her cards after the annual fee hit a few times. We have put most of the spend on my cards. I recently put spend on her cards, but she seems to be in pop-up jail. Sucks because 30,000pt Gold card referral and she should be able to get the green card with 45,000pt bonus. 75,000 opportunity is being missed 🤦‍♂️

AMEX the enemy of frugal people!!! Jokes aside, I barely spend anything on the blue cash everyday cuz it doesn't give me any value and just put my google subscription on it. Recently got approved for the Blue Plus, so that'll replace my citi double cash. Although I barely spend any money in general ($250-$300) per month. I was shocked that they approved me for the Business card, but Personal I often get rejected. I hope the BBP will get me out of AMEX jail on spending for personal cards.

I just keep 2 cards, Amex Platinum for every day purchases and a Capitol 1 Venture for places that don’t take Amex. So far, so good.

I closed two Amex cards in 2019 and one earlier this year. First got the pop-up in May, tried again in Nov but got it again. And I put a lot of spend on my Gold and BBP

It's so interesting seeing the variance in what triggers an account to be flagged. I guess well timed spends are critical! Fantastic walkthrough!

You are right about spending. I had one Amex card in my account (SimplyCash Business) which I hadn't used in about a year. When I went to apply to the Hilton Aspire last May I got the pop up. I spent about $100 on my Simplycash Business card in a month and the pop up went away and I got the Hilton Aspire. I put all my spending on the Hilton Aspire during the last 6 months and was just approved for the 100k Platinum card offer.

I feel like the overall spending does matter too. I have 8 Amex cards but only really regularly use two of them. But I do usually put several thousand a month on those two cards. Never had a pop-up window ever.

I got the pop up jail and I was denied for platinum. I sent a reconsideration letter and got approved. And I got the sign up bonus. Then I applied for the gold card 4 days later and was approved with sign up bonus.

I recently downgraded a Delta Platinum to the no AF card. I also have a no AF Hilton card and a super old Clear card. Maybe it’s time to cancel these.

Any data points on if having an AMEX savings helps out with Pop Up Jail? Banking relationship seems to help with Chase approvals.

I totally agree, banks are wise to the game of having a bunch of cards for niche reasons and not using them. I think it's wise to (over time) thin out cards that you are not using.

This is unfortunate if you are in "pop-up jail" and these are some great tips to get out or even avoid it. Thanks for the great video Dustin. Take care and keep the family safe!

Yep happened to my wife and I both. Both were in jail…Both had Delta cards we were not using much. We put about $300 on Amex cards for two months and out of jail…just in time for wife’s Amex Green 3X bonus in October and Platinum 100K with 10X Gas and Groceries for me in November. Great point on evaluating Amex strategy, I was thinking the same thing. Harder for two players…but we love to refer one another for the 30K and 20 K bonus we have access too. We have a couple more Amex slots to fill In 2021. Going to have to be strategic.

Does AE
Have access to the store purchases on items you buy
For example if I go to Walmart and buy 10 items can they see the 10 items I bought
Or if I go to a restaurant do they have access to see what I ordered

Do you need to have an existing relationship before applying the Platinum?

I cancelled my Hilton Surpass card last month and I am currently holding the Marriott Amex card. When I signed up from the referral link for Hilton Amex Card with no annual fee for the 100K bonus today, I got a pop-up jail. I still have used my Marriott Amex card several times a month for everyday purchase . When should I try to reapply the Hilton Amex with no annual fee again?

maybe you have an answer to my question. Today i got the pop up on my phone, I logged into my computer to see if i could get it again to get the language as i spend a lot on all my amex cards and have never cancelled a card, but i didnt get the pop up I was just approved. Amex chat doesnt know if i got an offer they said to wait for the card in the mail. Have you heard of this?

Was pre approved for the Aspire card knowing I have the 1st two basic Hilton cards and upon applying I get a pop-up stating that if approved I would NOT QUALIFY for their promotion… so I declined the application. SMH! REALLY?!

It’s just the same cards with different database. Unless the banks separate the users data in different databases physically I don’t see any difference from the different cards tiers.
