To answer your question: Have I ever experienced an Airbnb issue? Short answer, no. Only been to one in Charleston SC with a group of 5. I suggested to try an Airbnb so we could all stay together. House was around 1,500 square feet, was "inexpensive" compared to hotels and allowed us to get together in the living room / kitchen, etc in the evening after our trips out.

The owners lived down the street and resolved one minor thing we had. It was great and definitely would do Airbnb again. And I agree … been to many hotels that have issues as well; loud neighbors, TV issues, etc.

Good tips BTW. Same could be applied to eBay or doing anything over the internet.

What has been your experience with Airbnb stays? Have you ever experienced a major issue or scam? 😬

Not necessarily a scam, but sometimes with AirBnB once you add on the service and cleaning fees, it can often double the original rate listed. There have been a few times where I just stayed in a hotel because the final rate for an AirBnB was higher than a hotel after taxes. But I've seen this issue arise on short 1 night stays. My guess is that some these are 1 time fees so it works out better for longer stays.

I’ve stayed at Airbnb’s in around a dozen different countries. Two things I think you missed are to remember that there might be a language barrier between you and the host and try to find listings where the host actually lives. I got a poor review in France due to a poor translation of the house rules and it was kind of a bummer. At the same time, the best places I’ve stayed at belong to people who travel a lot for work (think business men or college professors) who actually take care of their space because they live there when not on the road.

Hey everyone, remember that in most countries they will ask for your passport information. This is done because of their local laws. We saw this in Rome, Venice, Paris and Madrid this summer.
