The other day Amex shutdown customer credit card accounts. And this was something we hadn’t seen before, this is even after Amex clawed back points from people. But there was a common theme to American Express shutdowns.

I wasnt shut down and never self referred, however I find it very sleazy for Financial Institute of this type to intentionally put a self referral links as a trap, then shut down accounts and not refund AFs or MRs. But if it was an internal mistake, which I believe it was, especially since Amex have made so many changes to their site, then the IT department should be held accountable. The Software QA Team failed. The regression test scripts failed and the build should not have been released, but you cannot blame your customer. Other companies reward customers for identifying bugs. This is a QA issue. If this happened to me , there would be a class suit.

Who care, just a credit card. They are making money by getting people use their “rewards” system

I'm glad these people are getting their accounts shut down. They ruin the points and miles game for all of us. I dont churn, manufactured spend, self refer or any of that. I actually find it difficult to ask for a retention offer just for some points when I'm going to cancel anyways. Anyways, I enjoyed the coverage on this topic, Dustin. It seemed to get a lot of views in a short period of time. Take care!

F the gamers and m$ers. If you don't have the spend you shouldn't reap the rewards. shut em all down.

Im about to get back on good terms with American Express. I stupidly got an Amex credit card back in 2014 was young (er) and I just totally screwed it up. The account has been closed for some time, but I just got a letter from them saying if I pay the $1,014 Ballance, then they will send me the Amex Optima paper application. I guess it's a credit card that you have with American Express for up to twelve months, and they monitor how you do with it. If they think that you are worthy, they let you back into the club? That's what I gather.

Are all accounts at risk like Hilton and Marriott or just MR cards??

Oh the self-righteous! Hoping Amex would also shutdown other "gaming" ventures like P1>P2 referrals and gift card spend(s). The flood of tears in this space would be hilarious!

Well self referring and manufacturing spend is pretty dumb anyway. That’s not what it’s meant for. They asked for it if they got shot down.

Does picking up a gift card at the grocery store trigger anything bad? Example. I don’t really like putting my card info into a lot of websites so I just pick up a for example amazon, target, Best Buy gift card while I’m doing my grocery shopping and just pay for it all with my Amex gold

Do you know whether getting/giving multiple referrals with the same person is considered okay by AMEX? Right now, I have the gold card, just referred my wife for the platinum – it isn’t technically self referral if we now go back and forth referring each other for new Amex cards, but it seems a little risky to me if Amex are cracking down on gaming behavior. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated!

How can you self refer? I thought each person can only get one card for each type.

Dustin, I’m even nervous about using incognito mode on a browser to get a higher sign-up bonus. Do you think Amex would decide to claw back bonuses and/or close accounts saying that you earned a sign-up bonus that was not intended for you?
