The Amex Platinum card gives 5x points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines and through Amex Travel. But now American Express is putting a yearly limit on that point earning. Just for reference the Business Platinum card has not imposed any annual limit so far.

Anyone who bumps up against the $500,000 cap should just get a second Platinum card. Get the Vanilla and the Schwab and then they can spend $1,000,000 on flights total. This life hack was free for you all!

People on the subreddit said it probably came from private Jets getting coded incorrectly.

Also what is the plan for generation snow this winter? Are you gonna come out west or stay in NY and VT?

All you do is pay credit cards with other credit cards and repeat the cycle. It's the only way.

I don’t even think George Clooney spent 500k a year in Up In The Air.

My first thought was "who spends over $500k on flight ✈️?". Then I though about shipping companies. FedEx and UPS executives probably use up over $500k on airfaire. Thus not having that limit for the Amex Business Platinum makes sense.

I got to find it interesting that for people gaming the system to spend over $500,000 in Airline fare to get 5X till now, it shows that Amex is still somehow worried, no?

I understand that $500,000 is out of the stratosphere for most people. But as more and more people get these cards with more regular spending cap limit (like AmEx gold) for groceries and eating out. Will Amex start to lower those limits as well for earning? Once they deem that there giving up more money than they initially wanted to versus how much they're getting back from the consumer?

Or could be as he said, diverting money back to themsleves by getting people to only use the AmEx portal.

Folks wouldn’t put business airfare on the personal Platinum if Amex’s customer service wasn’t so janky to deal with when flights are cancelled and you need to change or reschedule.

So much easier to deal directly with the airlines. Amex Travel is an annoying middle man when you need to make changes quickly.

Gee, now I guess I'll just have to go to Chase Freedom Unlimited and get 5X. Wait, $500,000!!!. Ok I guess I won't be losing any sleep.

If anyone can answer this, it would be greatly appreciated! Have you (or anyone you know) used your amex platinum on venmo to send money i.e. for rent, dinners etc etc to satisfy the minimum spend?

I have been reading all sorts of different stuff and I know that amex says "no cash equivalents" or "no peer to peer" but again, I've heard some people say it actually counts as a purchase and they were able to satisfy the minimum spend that way

Let me know! Thanks 🙂

I feel a lot people are misunderstanding the 500k. The 500k is the limit. In other words you will have 5x on flight purchased on Amex travel until you reached the limit after that 1x
It is not hey I will spend 500k to get 5x. Also note calendar year. Because if that says spend 500k to get 5x who will get that? I doubt even if you combine all the top 10 richest people they won't probably do that.
