Another fun one. I do want a venture x, but I think it’s important not to under sell the value of that chase travel portal to beginners who don’t want to devote too much energy to learning all the ins and outs of transferring points. Also, worth noting that card synergy is generally better with Chase. If you are interested in going back-and-forth between using points for travel and cashback, and willing to use multiple cards.

All of that said, the venture x is a beautiful card. Unfortunately, Capital One has a one Capital One card every six months rule or I would already have it.

I acquired both cards within a week of each other just a few months ago. I think this review is pretty good, however Ben glosses over one very important point that makes the CSR better at least for me. Specifically the domestic airlines that are part of Chase’s offer makes it a better option IMHO. I live in a market with a JetBlue hub, and I have been able to book a lot of economy flights through JetBlue for much less than most other airlines. After 3 months I have yet to book a single flight using VX miles. Most likely I’ll use these miles on international flights, but for domestic travel they’re almost useless. I’ve tried to book via VX code share partners, but the few options available are usually more expensive than JB.

If you don’t live in a JetBlue market, than maybe VX makes sense. However once the Spirit acquisition goes through (assuming it does), JetBlue may make the CSR the better option. Time will tell.

Don’t get too used to that lower AF on the VX. It was likely set low for customer acquisition. I’m betting it goes up in 2023.

Venture X is better. Lower AF and the travel portal is not bad. Plus, when there is a discussion of which is better, that means there is not a loser or clear winner. I have the Venture X and I really like it.

For international travel and airline transfer and their respective alliance, points from both cards are as valuable. For lazy people like me, VX provided slightly better flexibility due to 2X points on every purchase. Plus Premier Plaza and Priority Pass lounges world wide (over 1400 lounges) made VX a solid choice.

I can tell you my opinion before even watching the video… Chase. I'd rather pass another kidney stone than deal with Capital One's customer service.

+1 points to Chase for being a better company and card issuer than Capital One.

The Venture X is definitely a really solid card to get your feet wet in the luxury travel game and I think I would personally choose the Venture X over the CSR right now, especially if you already have the CSP. I think you bring up an interesting point as it comes to flying economy with the CSR, but to me, I think you can still get a ton of value by getting the CSP instead and transferring out to travel partners (even for economy flights) rather than getting the CSR. That'll save you a good amount of cost on the annual fee, and heck, you could even get a combo of the Venture X and CSP if you wanted. That's honestly probably what I'll do haha. Great video Ben!

I had the CSR, but cancelled it when the AF went up to $550. I now have Veture X, which I don't use a lot, but I'll keep it for effective negative AF. In premium space I also have Altitude Reserve, and consider it one of the best cards on the market, and Hilton Aspire. Also planning to get Ritz card. Capital one duo of Venture X + Savor One or Citi Premier is pretty good.

Depending on how much cell phone bill you are paying, it could be a big benefit with venture x, with the potential for racking up more miles at 2% rate. The only other card I know has the cell phone protection with 2% cash back is the wells fargo active cash, but its protection is only up to $600.

Plot twist, I actually have both. But in my opinion, the venture X is better.

On the Venture X website it says you need excellent credit including 5 years of history with cards over $5k in limits…any data on if this is really what it takes to get this card?

One niche area where CSR dominates is ppl who enjoy luxury cruises. The card offers great insurance and 3x points on all travel. That’s includes travel agents who book cruises. For most ppl the venture x will win out because it’s easy to wipe out the AF.

I’ve been surprised how much non bonused spend I’ve been able to push through the VX. It’s stuff like big ticket items, home repairs, car maintenance, health care costs and insurance premiums. Not exciting stuff all of which was going on the citi DC with the exception of the items which were going on an Amex BCP for the insurance. It’s really nice to have a 2x card with purchase insurance again.

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!!! Capital One has a Cafe Lounge which gives you 50% off your entire purchase as long as you hold any credit/debit card from them. The Cafe offers Pete's Coffee, which is better than most Instant coffee some banks offer.

You do get status with 3 car rental services with the CSR but honestly after using Hertz PC I prefer it. One thing to keep in mind is you can status match your Hertz PC to other car rental services. I did this with Enterprise and now have Enterprise Plus Platinum.

You need to spend 12-15 grand on the reserve just to break even on the annual fee after the travel credit.. this card sucks

From a travel portal experience, the capital one portal had more flight options for me when I was in Asia. This meant direct flights and paying a fraction of the price. The difference can amount to hundreds of dollars per ticket. Generally from a hotel perspective they are similarly priced(i need to do more direct comparisons), this is where the csr would be better due to the multiplier. The chase luxury collection from what I read is also may be avaliable on the csp.
