The Chase Sapphire Reserve and the Chase Sapphire Preferred are offering some new benefits to help get people through the current time period. In addition the JP Morgan Reserve is also doing the same, although not as many people have that card. Points can now be redeemed for cash back as a statement credit on grocery, home improvement and dining spending. This feature is called Pay Yourself Back. There will also be some changes to the travel credit and annual fee.

The 1.5/1.2 cent redemption is only for Credit Statement and NOT cashback. Let's do the math: $1500 grocery in June on CSR: $1500×5=7500 pts x 0.015 = $112.50 as a credit statement. No thanks for me, but if it makes sense for you then go for it.

I just got approved for a Fidelity CC to shift all my main usage onto. At 2% back on everything, that's awesome sauce and I'll use it for all. Downside (is it?) is that it goes into a Fidelity account. I'm just going to syphon it into my mutual fund account on auto invest.

This is awesome as someone who had 300k points worth of travel booked in July.

we may not be able to travel in the near future but airlines are offering ridiculously flexible policies right now. I booked some flights (w/ Reserve points) the other day for November, but I can cancel any time for a full refund. so if it doesn't happen, I'm off the hook.

that's huge news about the travel credit being applied to gas and groceries. I'll get that back on gas in about 2 months

My renewal on the CSR is 01/01 I hope I get the 450$ annual fee

Not at all interested in cashing in points (I’m not giving up my CSR any time soon, so I’m fine to hoard forever), but good to know they’re giving people the option. Also already used up the 300 ages ago (one flight takes that away as soon as I get it), so no help there. However, that 100 fee reduction is huge for me! I’ve already gotten substantial net benefit from the changes including the fee change (Lyft and doordash), so this means even greater annual return on the CSR. Very happy to hear this!

Chase is funny. If you can, just get the Navy Federal Flagship Rewards:
3x points all travel to include hotels, airlines, gold courses, tours, and cruises
2x points on everything else
$100 statement credit for global entry
$49 annual fee, waived the first year
4,900 points can be used towards the annual fee
Visa Signature
No foreign transaction

Did understand this correctly. So you're saying from July to the end of the year we will basically have $300 in free gas on the CSR?

Would annual fee be $450 for people who open up account during this time? or is this only for people who already have the card?

Reply
Richard May 28, 2020 - 11:09 pm

Another benefit from chase is that if they don't like your politics they'll close your account.

Does the $450 reduced fee apply for new applicants and upgrades from the preferred, or is this only for current card holders that have an upcoming renewal date?

idk but I had to play the video 3 times to understand well…

maybe the background music is a way of making us watch the video more to increase youtube profit?
well done mate #Respect (u got me there)
I also have 103k points sitting there. With the CSR and the 300 credit I feel like Bora Bora is closer than what I Expected 🙂 lol

If you use your points to "erase" a charge, do you still earn points for that charge? In other words, is it better to erase home improvement charges than grocery?

if I upgrade my CSP to the CSR do I get the $450 annual fee?

Reply
Frederico Huguenin May 31, 2020 - 3:03 am

I think waving annual fees would make more sense then forcing people to spend more. Screw these banks with High annual fee, you might as well use the $550 to pay for your own things.

Albert Castro May 31, 2020 - 4:22 am

Hey guys, I have nearly 160k UR points and the Sapphire preferred. I was considering signing up for the freedom to create the “trifecta”, but am now considering upgrading to the Reserve (though I won’t get the sign-up bonus for that like I would in the freedom)…any thoughts on if that’s worth it? I don’t think I’d keep the reserve long term and likely downgrade before renewing, but I like the idea of redeeming those points for 1.5 instead of 1.25.
