The key to this travel hack is to time your spending so you can get two years of free flights. The Southwest Airlines Companion Pass is valid for the year you earned it and all the following year.

Step 1 – Apply for the Southwest Priority credit card, Southwest Premier credit card, or Southwest Plus credit card now. But don’t use it.
Step 2 – In Late December or the beginning of January, meet your minimum spending. You want the points to post in 2022, not 2021 to take advantage of two years of free flights. Points from Southwest credit card spending and the signup bonus count towards earning the Southwest Credit Card Companion Pass.

Shortcut this travel hack. Instead of earning the second 50,000 points on your personal Southwest credit card, get a Southwest business card. Earn 80,000 points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months using the Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card.
