Citi Credit Card Temporary Lockdown Benefits Explained – The Credit Shifu

When you can’t really travel on planes, airport lounges are closed and you are probably spending less than normal. March did see the biggest decline in Credit Card use since 1989, so how are you going to meet minimum spend for those sign up bonuses?

Well that is the first thing Citi has done and actually this is the same deal as with American Express. If you open a citi card between Dec 1st 2019 and May 31st 2020, you will have 6 months instead of 3 months to meet the minimum spend for the welcome bonus. So actually you can still take advantage of this for new cards you apply for, all the way up until the end of may.

Now let’s look at the Citi Prestige, Citi’s tier 4 premium travel credit card, you see the problem is no one is really traveling right now, so Citi is allowing cardmembers to use their Prestige’s $250 travel credit for supermarkets and restaurants. Obviously those two categories are probably two for the three biggest spending categories during the lockdown, the third one being amazon dot com, which I talk about in my video on best lockdown credit cards. That will work all the way up until December 31st 2020.

Then we have the American Airlines credit cards from Citi. The names of these cards are all real mouthfuls, here we go, first the Citi Aadvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard! Thew. Anyway, now this card recently added a $125 AA flight discount after you spend $20,000 in a card member year and then renew your card. If your discount was set to expire between march 31st and May 31st, you will receive a 6 month extension. In case you are wondering this is a tier 3 card in my 5 tier credit card tier system and has an annual fee of $99.

Ok now for the next one, the Citi Aadvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard, I think that one is actually easier to say than the other one. Now this is Citi’s premium American Airlines card, a tier 4 card in my 5 tier system with an annual fee of $450. It gives cardholders full admirals club membership and another big advantage is you can add up to 10 authorized users who get access to admirals club lounges, but not partner lounges, still a great perk. I remember one time I made a video on this and some young guy commented that his dad had this card and he went of and got his dad to add him as an authorized user, and then commented again saying thanks man, I just got Admirals Club access from an authorized user card!

Anyway, for cardmembers who’s accounts were open as of March 31st 2020, when you renew you will be given a $225 credit, to make up for the fact that most Admirals clubs are currently closed. This effectively halves the annual fee and will probably make a lot of people feel it is worth it to keep the card.

Lastly we have the Citi Business Aadvantage Platinum Select World Mastercard, and this offers a companion certificate for main cabin travel after you spend $30,000 in a year. If your certificate is expiring December 31st, Citi and AA are offering an extension to June 30th 2021.

Ok now one last thing is that Citi recently announced a load of changes to the Citi Premier. Now one of these changes is that the card will earn 3x points per dollar at restaurants, starting August 23rd 2020. I wish Citi would start this sooner, since take out from restaurants is one of the biggest spending categories during the current lockdown.
