The Citi Premier credit card from Citibank is bringing in some new benefits such as a new $100 hotel credit and two new 3x bonus categories, 3x on restaurants and 3x on groceries. Sound familiar? yeah thats basically the Amex Gold, except that card from American Express is 4x. But the Citi Premier does include and additional category, 3x on travel like the Chase Sapphire Reserve does.

If I was only keeping this card for the 25% bonus, does Citi have a card with no annual fee that let's me keep my ThankYou points and access transfer partners?
Hey Shifu, thanks for this video I'm going to look into getting this card. You know I was wondering about The Diner’s Club credit card—is that credit card still around—and if so is it a credit card worth getting? What do you think of doing a video essay on what’s going on with Diner’s Club cards?
The fact that you need to book the hotel through the Citi portal, and spend $500 on it makes not that good. Since most hotels won't give you points or credit toward elite status on nights booked through a third party you lose out on that which can be quite a lot, especially if you have status with the chain. The multipliers are nice, though not sure if that's worth the annual fee alone since the card doesn't offer much else.
Wow Do you see any advantage to keep the Citi Double Cash over the Premiere card?? Where is the break even point to offset the $95 annual fee??
Citi still sucks because they cut travel protections. So no citi.. I will still keep my amex and chase.
Should have increased entertainment as they are the only ones with that category. I don't think they equaled the competition with the 3X since their points aren't even valued as high as AMEX or Chase points in the first place. So stay with something unique if you can't beat them OR join them.
I think citi is been taken all the privileges we have before, car insurance….. at the end doesn’t attract me this card at all.
Hey did anyone else notice that the Duck card no longer get's 5% back on gas that really has me mad I really wanted to get that card.
I have a question. Is 1% Credit utilization perfect utilization? Is this myth true if you actually nail that 1%?
Good Video, Ben. This is news is disappointing for me, because I was thinking about getting this card (after I buy a new house). I mainly would have gotten this card because of the cruise category (cruises are fun) and the entertainment category. Now, I won't get this card. The hotel credit is meaningless to me because I need to spend $400 to get that credit. Plus i have the CSR and AMEX Gold and they still have their ancillary benefits that Citi canned almost a year ago.
LOL….."I spent my $100 Hotel Credit on a week's stay at the Blue Swallow Motel." 🤣
And resort or only hotel?
I got the Premier just for the sign up bonus last August, but have been using it for Netflix and anything travel related (except airfares) since then. Was planning on downgrading after year one.
I'll now have to reevaluate that plan.
Shifu I’m a student and businessman, what Amex card would you recommend for me in the U.K?
Pretty sad that the 1.25 towards travel is going away but glad they’re bringing multiples for grocery stores. I’m probably still gonna keep it around though.
I going with this and citi prestige always wanted citi cards
So it's a one-time $100 credit? Not every $500 stay?
I get tolls and parking but taking cruises out is crap. What about travel agencies?
I think it’s more comparable to the Amex green than the gold for its travel benefits.
YAAAAAAY! Groceries and restaurants!
so existing members get all of the current benefits plus the new benefits (starting on Aug of this year) for one whole year?
Great video… the 25% point multiplier is a bigger loss than described in this video. with the citi double cash being an option, you can use the double cash for 2c back on these categories already for 0 AF. The move now is to get big value from transferring points to partners… if not you're probably better of with the double cash.
Do you know if this credit can be repeated? Meaning I am a road warrior and I pay $500 in hotels every week, do I get $100 credit a week? (I don’t think you specified this) whether if it’s only one a year
I'd like to point out that Amex Gold 4x points grocery store requirement isn't only American grocery stores, it's any store that codes as grocery. So Korean, Japanese, Chinese, etc. grocery stores count as long as it's located in the US. I've seen people misinterpret this so I just wanted to clarify.
This seems like a competitor to the AMEX Green not Gold as the Green has 3x food 3x general travel
I think it's good that they gave a year to redeem points with the 25% bonus, it gives people a chance to spend their points
Not crazy about these changes. Just a crappy version of the Amex Gold. At least with the old benefits it compliments the Gold Card well if u dump the points to parters in common with Amex. But now it’s a mediocre card following the trend of every other luxury card. Meh.
I’m considering a citi set up seeing as I’m over 5/24…
Helpful video thank you !
I already have cards for supermarkets, and restaurants, and hotels. The bread and butter of this card for me was travel and Entertainment. And the removal of the bonus points. Wow. This will become just a gas card for me. I'm not happy about it.
How much are thank you points worth? I see such a wide number out there.
I have seen people ask if they can use business cards for personal use. I just seen this card say it is considered fraud to use it for non personal use. WOW meaning don't use this card for business use.
Definitely a fan of the changes. The addition of 3x on groceries sort of shifts this from a "travel card" to an "everyday spend card" especially when accounting for the fact it sill gets you 3x on gas (something CSP/CSR and Amex Gold don't do). And I'm good with this. As others have pointed out, because of Citi's decision to remove travel protections from all their cards, I wasn't going to use this card for air travel anyway. But as a daily driver (groceries and gas) this aint half bad.
How can I talk to you about a few questions I have about Credit Cards?
I have both the premier and the gold. I think it might be time to cancel the gold card. I don’t think the extra 1x is worth the 250$ annual fee. The 100 dollar airline credit on the gold has always been a pain to use (mostly fly southwest). I think citi nailed it with this update.
Does the 3x on air travel and hotels have to be booked with the airlines and hotels directly, or will Citi honor the bonus with purchases made with an OTA?
Can you use thank you points on hotels ?
Dont you have a Star Trek based show>

How much is 60,000 bonus points for cash back?
For an infrequent traveler, I can see this being a good card. It will depend on the cost of hotels on the ThankYou portal vs the other sites, but the potential to have so many 3x categories for no annual fee is pretty good. Couple it with the Double Cash and it is a simple 2 card set up to run.
So you pay an annual fee that can then in turn offer a 'free hotel credit.' Sounds like a wash to me. If you get a regular credit card instead, you can get the standard 2% back instead. While I like points, it's important to assign a value to them. Sometimes, credit cards give you more points, but they are so heavily inflated already.
For groceries does it apply to US online only groceries stores.
Good video, but a correction. You said the Sapphire Reserve gets 1.25 cents for travel redemptions, but I think you meant to say the Sapphire Preferred gets 1.25 for travel redemptions.
You can't use the Premier as your only travel card because it has no travel protection. For me I have the CSR and Freedom, and Premier and Double Cash combos. I use my CSR to receive 3x UR on airfare (CSR offers great travel protection), dining and all other general travel spend, and my Freedom to receive 5x UR on the quarterly bonus categories. I will use my Premier to receive 3x TYP on gas and groceries, and my Double Cash to receive 2x TYP on all other non-bonus spend. If in the future I decide to downgrade my CSR to CSP, I will use my CSP to receive 2x on airfare and prepaid, non-refundable hotels (won't use the Premier for these categories due to no travel protection) and all other general travel spend, and my Freedom to receive 5x for the quarterly bonus categories. I will use my Premier to receive 3x for gas, dining, groceries and hotels that allow me to cancel, and my Double Cash to receive 2x on all other non-bonus spend.
Does new 3x categories apply to worldwide spending? I read a post on other site saying it's worldwide, not sure if it is true
is this a world elite card? or are they two type of card you may qualify for?
I wonder if it's worth upgrading? They just sent me an upgrade offer for this. I don't like the annual fee and that you have to book the hotel through them.
