Could Amex Offers Be CHANGING And Offering LESS VALUE? – Waller’s Wallet

by YouTube Team

American Express Offers are some of the best credit card benefits available. They offer great ways to save money or earn extra points, but there were some new Amex offers the other day that made me wonder could we see Amex offers change. If so, how does this affect the value of card like the Amex Platinum, or Amex Gold card?

The only AMEX offer I use on my Gold card is the GrubHub +1 MR pt/dollar. But only if I have no other choice. For example, I maxed out the 5% 3Q 2020 category for Discover It (so therefore I use the Gold card as a backup for Dining purchases). Come Q4 2020, the Chase Freedom (Flex) offers PayPal as a 5% category for rewards. Buying digital GrubHub gift cards via PayPal is what I'm planning for up to 15,000 UR pts (7,500 for the Freedom, and 7,500 for the Freedom Flex).

I do have other AMEX cards like the BBP (recently I used a 10% back up to $40 Staples offer), and the BCP (no offers worth using as of now). 🙁

Thanks for the update on the offers. Im 50/50 on amex right now, but i think its because of the overall economic conditions, I dont use my cards how I intended to to when i acquired them. The offers were just an added bonus, and I still feel the variety of diff offers are way better than any other card. Perhaps the portal/link thing is in infancy but down the road might have a better competitive edge. Time will tell lets see what happens

I see more the Neo banks start to break paradigms in the financial service because focus of how finance is done on every country. For example people can go into the Visa website (www.visa.com) and to notice what people Value on each country. For example in the Middle East exist more segmented Visa Tiers and aa part of the intelligent city developments each Tier offers different type of service (Noticeable for knowledgeable people) https://ae.visamiddleeast.com/en_AE/pay-with-visa/find-a-card/debit-cards.html

So it’s about how we articulate ourselves value. US recently is very “perks driven” and 1x, 2x, 3x points increase while Dubai is more about the card giving you a fancy gourmet meal upgrade if you have Visa Signature instead of just Visa Debit, or upgrading your shopping product from a unbranded sneaker shoe into the next tier of price (so if the basic shoe of Dolce and Gabanna costs You 300 USD, Visa Infinite will upgrade you to buy the next tier (the one of 330 USD). It’s about perfecting the products and services you buy rather than getting points to buy items you already have.

I rarely use their personal offers, outside of travel. Fedex on the business side is a big one though, even 10% is fully utilized on the Business Gold. Saving $800 in a quarter, or $1,000 in 6 months, make that $295 annual fee seem like nothing.

I love Amex offers but yes I agree that they have gotten worse over the past few weeks. From my 100 offers I actually shop at only 1-2 stores. Half of the offers seem like they are high end clothing stores or wine websites.

Seventeenth! Most of the offers I won't use because I don't t shop there, and the offers I have been getting have less relevance to my shopping habits.

Using the Rakutan chrome Plug in I have been able to double stack the recent AmEx Dell credit with Rakutan even though I had to go through a dedicated link.

Bad form AMEX! Lowe’s and Staples offers have been great for me. Although 98% of the offers I get are just useless. Add them only to keep making room for new ones. Wish they had a way to discard the offers that you weren’t going to use. Shop small offer was awesome for me. Lots of local dining that I already use.

I got a link for 2.5% back with overstock.com up to $50. There are lots of shopping portals for 3% or 4% back with no maximum. It's a shame for American Express.

Great video! my wife is the authorize user for the Amex Gold. She does not have an online account. If she creates an online account, can she refer me for the Amex Green? Will Amex claw points?

Yeah, I don't like this idea. I love American Express Offers and that would be a hit on my battleship. Would you still use American Express Offers? Take care Dustin and keep the family safe!

Good now I can cancel amex. Already unhappy about how hard it is to redeem the travel incidental, if the offers go then so do I. Let's hope they listen to their audience and reconsider.

Great video, I’ve always seen Amex offers as one of the following types, all of which are paid for by the merchant with the exception of the last type. Travel, Local, Trash, and finally sectoral. Trash is usually a bunch of high margin luxury/gift/clothing/wine retailers. The sectoral type is the pay your cell phone, utility, cable, or spend at Amazon, Walmart, Target. I assume that is Amex trying to get me to change my behavior by giving me some annual fee back. Same with spend small. The new category is basically rotten trash, trash offers but for low %. I hope this isn’t the future.
Oh one other thing I think the whole point of the Travel category is for hotels to be able of offer a discount around the OTAs.

One tip I have not heard anyone mention. if you set up an online account for your authorized user they will get different offers then you. Offers are tied to the card, not the account. If you sign up for an offer it will not apply to authorized users card. They have to sign up for there own offers. I was able to add the recent $50 shop small credit to both my and my wife’s cards netting $100 and have doubled up on some other offers.

I think in general Amex Offers are frequently for niche/expensive merchants, especially lately, but this move is even more limiting. They have been going downhill for awhile, but if this new trend of shopping portal continues, it's just one less reason to even bother dealing with other Amex headaches (restrictive credits to recoup your fee for example).
