One thing we need to keep in mind is that we’re not really losing anything with these changes, but we’re not really gaining anything either.

One minor pro to these additional spending categories on the Freedom Unlimited and Freedom Flex (assuming you have the trifecta) is that it further reduces the desire to add an authorized user (i.e. your significant other) to the CSR, potentially saving you another $75 annually.

It means that the best Chase trifecta is CIP/CFU/CF or CFF. You get CSR trifecta earning for $95.

Well said!

I am hoping this is just a first of other steps that includes improvement of the CSP and CSR!

And what if you don’t have the reserve?

Dustin, it’s not that much better but it works good as a stand alone card for me because I primarily run the Amex trifecta😄

If i only had the Flex, can I transfer points out to a partner like southwest? And if so, would having the csp increase points transferred by 1.25? Also, is the Pay Yourself Back influenced by csp 1.25 multiplier? Thinking about getting Flex and then maybe csp.

I kind of believe that Chase is resisting adding grocery and gas categories permanently because they don’t want to invest heavily in fighting ms like Amex has had to do. Maybe the drug store category is a test run.

Waller is the wallet for my wallet.

Make sure you aren’t using your credit card just for the 3% points if you have a health savings account. Anyone with a health savings account should use that tax free money for both prescription and non prescription drugs over any credit card.

I agree with the analysis here. It is a minimal update. Now, the grocery category will be the catalyst to more shutdowns than this new drugstore one.

I reached same conclusion. Any downsides to product change from Freedom to Flex if you already have trifecta?

I'm just salty that I have no Chase cards at all yet because of the 5/24 Rule…. and I have 19 credit cards… Which card of the trifecta should I get first?

I really think a game changing modification would be an update to the Sapphire cards not the Freedom or Freedom Unlimited. Sure this is a plus but not anything head turning. Take care Dustin and stay safe!

@dustin If you didn't yet have the trifecta, but had csr, cip, and cfu, would you dg the csr to freedom now (if they'll even let you still)? Yr2 csr AF should hit any day now, so I'm thinking as I'm not travelling anyway, maybe i jump on pcing to the original freedom, and using cip for transfers and or portal. Wwyd? Other than cdw and trip delay/baggage, would i be losing anything? Was thinking of maybe getting US bank checking to be able to get AR later, maybe this just speeds that up a little

I wonder if Chase will allow to product change from a Chase Slate to a Freedom Flex?!

For me it is not worth to product change because I have the CFU which has the same benefits as the CFF. I agree with you that there has to be something additional for the Sapphire cards.

The sole source of clear logic. Give us Groceries and Gas as a 5% category all year. 5% Groceries for one year is nice but what happens next year??

I’m not that impressed.. I agree they should’ve added grocery category maybe 3x on reserve?

You should apply for the new Ford credit card $$$$$ and post a review.

Actually, I think it does radically improve the trifecta. If your trifecta is the Freedom Unlimited, Freedom Flex and the Chase Ink Preferred, it is great news. $95 buys a lot!

Flex – 5x rotating categories, 3 x drug store, 3x restaurant

Chase Ink Preferred – 3x travel, transfer to travel partners, 1.25 in travel portal

Chase Freedom Unlimited – 1.5 everywhere else (actually there are better cards for non-bonus spend)

The Flex will be a little more of a hassle if whole sale clubs become a bonus category considering Costco doesn't except MasterCard in their physical stores or gas stations.

I think the Chase trifecta was already good, and adding drugstore and cell phone protection makes them that much better. I have the Chase Ink trifecta but its cell phone protection is less good and for that reason the Flex is a big upgrade — I think it's a significant new benefit. That can save up to $20/month/line or more — for our family it's a big win. People always talk about gas as a category, but honestly — most people aren't going to be spending more than about maybe $100-$200 on gas and that just doesn't add up to huge points regardless — maybe $5? Grocery would be an amazing add but let's be realistic — that would make the benefit way too expensive to be worth it, It seems to me.

I’m not gonna lie, I felt a little offended when you said the CSP sucks 😂 what do you recommend? Upgrading to CSR in a year? (I just got the CSP 3 months ago)

Shed a tear for people whose FICO scores aren't good enough to get the Chase Freedom card before it disappears for good. Can we still call it the Chase trifecta with the Freedom Flex since it's a Mastercard not a Visa? Maybe call it a Chase two-point-five-fecta?

If i am looking to start my chase trifecta, what card should i go with? the flex or unlimited?

They must have heard you b/c the Flex card gives you 5% on groceries for the first year.

3% on dining, not travel and dining.

Ok! I’m really confused! I’m a chase banking customer! I applied for the Chase unlimited after getting Amex Blue Cash Everyday with a $3,000 limit! I’m in PA and chase uses Transunion for credit and i have a FICO bank card score 8 of 773! They denied me when i first applied and called reconsideration line and they approved it! So i got a denial letter before my chase unlimited card came as it i was denied first! It said my credit score was 773! When my card came it said my credit score was V2 risk and my score was 689! How is this? I got only a $500 limit with chase! When should i get a credit increase!

when earning points and not travelling, use Freedom flex and you can easily rack up points… and when you are about to redeem for travel, that's the only time to upgrade or get the Sapphire Reserve
