You know, I was going to come on here and complain about the increase. I actually own the Schwab Plat and Marriott Bonvoy and these AF hikes aren't true to my liking. But I am starting to believe that $700 is the new $550/$450. Some will xfer to CSR and alike but now, what is truly stopping those firms from increasing the fee on their luxury cc's. Its almost no escape. Either quit or play the game. Anyway, I will downgrade or cancel one of these cards. No need for both or any in particular. As some say, these are heavy coupon cards.

If it moves from a hotel credit to a dining credit its not worth it for me anymore.

Marriott is known for pulling some shits like this.

I don't like it. Essentially buying status will mean everyone can get platinum and they would all want upgrades. Platinum status will be pretty much worthless. I think they should stick to gold status, reduce the 85k award to a 70k, but keep the 25 elite night credits

I was all for it until you mentioned $650 lol

I’m an Ambassador Elite member, don’t buy into the hype. Platinum, Titanium or Amb Elite they are nothing special, most of the time you will not even get an room upgrade cause the hotel is full or they just don’t want to do it, no special rate for these elite members. My ambassador is literally useless, there’s absolutely no special treatment, they can’t do anything to help you get an upgrade, they can help you make reservations…. Which I can do on the app in 5 mins. Most cases you are better off not involve the ambassador.

Honestly if they would add Centurion lounge access to this card it would be an easy choice

Or you could just spend $450 and get Hilton’s highest status and get a weekend night that can be used at nearly any of their properties.

Those benefits for that fee don’t interest me.

Sorry Amex, I love you so much for accepting me for the Amex platinum, gold, green, and cash preferred in one month. However, this Marriott card will not work for me. I thought I was going to apply for this card and use it only for hotel booking and use my platinum to book flights… I think ill just stick with my platinum card for everything. Gold card for dinning, green card for tolls and transportation, and cash preferred for some daily spending along side with the gold card.

Would be great If it’s true EXCEPT for the damn restaurant credit. The 300$ credit should remain hotel credit.

Reply
Spurgeon August 25, 2021 - 9:49 pm

You almost had me until you said they were changing the $300 credit. Keep the $300 credit the same and make the elite night credit 35 and I am in! As is, no way would I pay $200 extra basically just for a 1 level status upgrade and diminished credit.

I like the perks and earning at 50K spend. Not much of a Bonvoy person anymore, but I would like to see the Hilton Aspire copy this with a better incentive at their 60K threshold.

$650 annual fee? No thanks…this is a hotel card not a Amex plat or CSR…whats the value of these Marriott points?

I would say…just give better multipliers if they want people to spend on the card. I guess if they throw a big sign up bonus I’d be down

They are pretty crappy changes though.

I have this card now and $300 credit is really useful. I hate these dining credits since you cannot carry over month over month.

Downgrade I only have for 300 yearly credit and free night

Maybe it worth for business owner, I am not and I am not going to spend $50k on this card just to get free night.

Just curious, am I the only one here with any Marriott Bonvoy card that has never stayed at Ritz Carlton or St. Regis?
Point it, whoever stays at 85K points per night hotels a lot probably don't care about the annual certificate anyway.

Good changes but I'm getting really tired of these monthly dining credits 🙄 idk why amex always wants to do monthly credits. Amex is my favorite card issuer but these monthly credits sometimes make me consider switching to the Chase ecosystem..

I think the biggest problem Marriott has with its credit cards are the lack of difference in multipliers at their properties. If you're paying a premium annual fee why can't they change it from 6X to 12x, at least. I think that would help. The 85k room certificate would also help but they should max it to the 95K room booking. Take the Hilton approach, their certificate works at any of their standard rooms, all the way up to 150,000 points.

So would this card + the 15th elite nights from the Amex Marriott business card give someone titanium status?

Reply
J Deveraux August 26, 2021 - 5:27 am

Ben. You know I love you but you’re totally smoking crack if you think this annual fee hike would be worth it. This is garbage. Looks like I won’t be renewing this card. I recently got my APR jacked up because they changed their lending requirements. So even though my credit score has gone up consistently since I got the card, I guess now that doesn’t matter. The way the Amex does their stupid credits is why I won’t continue to use their products. A one-time travel credit for you is easy to use and keeps me interested—this rationing crap is just a money-grab

Trash move to make it a monthly dining credit instead of 300 credit for use at marriot. Love the status boost and higher level night bit idk yet…

Reply
Tony August 26, 2021 - 6:20 am

I'd cancel my card if these changes are implemented. Making it harder to use the $300 credit is obnoxious and the higher value free night isn't worth an extra $200 to me

The platinum status is about damn time! M Club lounge access is a welcome bonus…they should keep the 300$ credit the way it is. 550$ fee would be the smart choice.

Bradley Barker August 26, 2021 - 12:34 pm

I might be in the minority here but as someone who earns platinum by stays (and sometimes titanium) see this as a major devaluation to platinum status.

Gotta admit, @Shifu you are coming off a bit sales-y here. In the past you would've called this out for what it is, a cash grab. Getting value out of Amex cards is becoming more akin to coupon-tracking and these changes would only make it worse. Not to mention Platinum status for $200 extra is outrageous. Marriott Platinum status already means very little because franchises rarely honor the upgrades/late checkouts –which are the only useful perks of that status. All the hotel lounges are closed due to Covid so that doesn't matter either. Amex was extremely profitable the past few quarters, and this is just another way to increase their profits even more while offering almost nothing tangible. I'm a bit surprised at how you are speaking so glowingly about this tbh.

4 American🇺🇸 Patriots🇺🇸 died , this is only the start, Joe Biden🇮🇷 and his Democrat🇮🇷 Administration are responsible for this .

Jan 6 Election Prtoest seems quite justified now. Biden and team are indeed unfit. I saw the House Democrats are still trying to make Jan 6 into a thing to get Trump, while their party just gave Terrorists 85 Billion in US weapons? Stranding Americans , Afghans and now American soldiers are dying there. Keep going with your “Jan 6” thing Democrats…lol

Trump didn’t lose anyone , soldiers of civilians abroad last 24 months in office

I would prefer to keep the $300 statement credit for marriott reservations…and also be gifted 30 elite nights instead of the platinum status…. i think the platinum status should be earned by staying at least a few nights per year…really hope the rumor isnt true.

A 44% jump in annual fee in addition to them restricting your $300 credit to a monthly dining coupon book. Back to the drawing board with Amex.
