Any thoughts on personal AMEX cards for military personnel? I recently discovered there is no annual fee for most cards for military personnel and was therefore considering upping to the Platinum card. I use my Green card primarily for online purchases, big ticket purchases, and travel related purchases such as hotel reservations, airline tickets, and rental car insurance. I’ve used the Green card since 2003.

The changes overall seem negative for Amex. But platinum members do get the Departures magazine. lol

Hi Sebby, why don't you put a news graphic at the bottom of the screen listing the issues? Like 5-8 boxes with the issues you'll discuss, and the one you're currently discussing highlighted. That way people can skip through for the items relevant to them. I almost skipped this video because the first items you mentioned were negative for AMEX Plat, so it didn't make me reconsider.

Why haven't you covered the Alliant 3% cash back card? This is a great card for many viewers (after the first year becomes 2.5%, still great). I found your blog post answering this question, but some of us only watch your videos. I still think the annual fee is worth it for the 0.05% more than Double Cash, because many family units easily spend the breakeven ($20k/year or $1,600/month), not to mention you can still get those points on purchases abroad, unlike DC.

Also, it's a strong incentive not to bother with Gift Cards for 5% quarterly items. Yeah, I could buy $1,500 worth of Gift Cards at gas stations today, to get $75 cash back (or $112 if I have CSR), but when I consider I'll already get $45 cash back for the same amount in purchases with Alliant, it's not even worth it. So much simpler, and more time to focus on other, better ways to save more money (eg: I get gas way cheaper at Costco, so I don't care if they code it for 5% or not because I'm not as concerned with fitting rotating categories)

Overall, the changes seem positive. For now, I’m sticking with the CSR.

Sebby, pushing through illness!!! RESPECT!! (also take care of yourself)

My thoughts, 1:52 EDP keeping return protection makes think about upgrading my ED card, 2:10 I think people use these benefits enough to justify keeping them but not enough to be a major expense and get them cancelled, 3:48 losing roadside assistance is kinda bummer but I have that with the CSR plus whatever I have left after down grading my AAA Premium Roadside Assistance, Liking the Hilton Aspire, AMEX Gold, and Delta Platinum cards with Trip Delay Protection, 5:30 I don't understand why you are still recommending the CSR over the AMEX Platinum they have identical Trip Delay protections???

Final thought is that I see the Hilton Aspire card become a AMEX Platinum Lite!!

I just called AMEX customer service and they said they weren’t taking away the roadside assistance can you link the source where you found this information?

AMEX used to be the card you could count on and “never leave home without it” now it’s like “wtf I bring this for?!”

If I book flights for April 2020 on my platinum card now, do I get the trip protection benefits ?

Reply
Daniel Mewes October 13, 2019 - 11:34 pm

I've never used any of the purchase insurances / return protection, so don't care much. Roadside assistance was something I was glad to have though and actually used once. Sad to see that go, but not a huge deal.
The changes to the travel benefits make sense and sound useful to me.

Confused about the roundtrip part of the equation…what if you are going roundtrip but book with two diff. airlines. IE: JFK->LAX via Delta and return LAX->JFK via JetBlue. Still all good?

I have both the AMEX Platinum and Delta Reserve cards. I do love them both even thought their rewards perks are very similar, however I've been debating adding the Chase Sapphire Reserve to my armory of awesome travel cards just for fun. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hi. It doesn't seem many of these changes occurred or maybe I'm missing something. Any updates? Amex still has the purchase protection and warranty extension programs on the gold rewards card.

In a past life I worked in Towing… The third parties that contract out these kinds of roadside services for credit cards, car insurance, phone plans, club memberships don't pay very much money to the provider.. You're talking maybe $40 to change a tire 30 miles away at 2am in the rain when the average price in my area was about $95-130. This leads to poor performance (late tow trucks) and no performance (no tow trucks). Something like AAA will always outperform.(especially outside major cities where tow companies have less competition) ..complaints are probably why amex would axe this coverage.
