45,000 point signup bonus on incognito, plus I got a 60$ credit because the instant card number access option was malfunctioning make this card a no brained in year one. Clear credit and away luggage don’t mean anything to me but I’ll use the lounge buddy option for sure.

Hey Sebby. I just got my Morgan Stanley AMEX Platinum card. I qualified for it having 88k in a Roth IRA that they manage and following the Premier Cash Management form they gave me in order to receive my MS AMEX card. My question is what should I do with my regular AMEX Platinum card, I have only had it since March this year. Should I just cancel it when I hit 13 months? I have the Premier Cash Management pdf they sent me if you need to look at it. Let me know.

So, if I am someone who works in Afghanistan for 8-9 months a year, and travels full time the other 3-4. Would I be better served with the Gold card or this. I feel like with clear and the other benefit, it about pays for itself. I don’t get to use the Uber eats and restaurant benefits because I’m deployed all the time. So I lose value there. This seems the best way to salvage points while eating out that I don’t get with my platinum. While not having a high fee either. So it really earns me more when I eat at the Amex dining collections in my travels. I don’t think I would earn enough in that extra 1 point/dollar with the gold card to make up the difference.

Green card is a beast. If you pay any more than $119 for Clear each year you aren't looking around. Clear for $19 or less each year, plus the lounge buddy access for Lufthansa Business Lounge Access when you need it. To have an AMEX card that will get you MR points on something other than Flights and Hotels (limited on hotels at best) is fantastic. Not worth a 5/24 spot, but once you are over 5/24 I cannot understand why you would not pick one up for at least the first year.

For me, I've never considered Clear or LongeBuddy. So the EAF is $150 compared to the Gold Card which has an EAF of $30 ($130 if the travel credit becomes impossible), but the Gold Card gives 4X on all food not just restaurants at 3X.
This seems like a MASSIVE flop to me even if you ignore Chase, Citi, etc.

CSR vs AMEX Green Card. The CSR's credits are much easier to use. Priority Pass > Lounge Buddy. Ability to pair CSR with Freedom. CSR gets primary rental insurance. Visa is accepted more places than AMEX. I really wanna get the Green Card myself for some reason, but its credits suck, and I just cant justify getting it over the CSR or Wells Fargo Propel.

I think this is a more CSP competitor than a CSR.
But I am confused with Amex philosophy here. As you move up their cards pyramid towards premium card they make it more and more difficult to use the benefits.
First the credits on Green come with no restrictions like Airline credit, Dining credit or Uber and Saks on Gold and Plat. It's easiest to use if someone really wants to use them.
Now the multipliers
Green: take 3x on EVERYTHING you want
Gold:4x ONLY dining and supermarket
Plat: 5x on airfare booked ONLY with airline and hotel ONLY booked through us. Oh I also won't give priority pass restaurant. Keep paying more money suckers!!

You mentioned a time when you were a student.
Could you do a video on the best cards to use perhaps while you are a student to rack up points to use for a bunch of free travel when you are done with school. Currently a student using credit cards for big purchases like tuition just to get the points and trying to maximize the benefits. Just got the venture card through your website for the sign up bonus. Thanks!

Expected value is ~$500 for year one and only ~$50 after that. Only planning on putting METRO travel spend on it (which isn't multiplied by Gold or Platinum). Running an AMEX cash back set up with Gold & Schwab Platinum. Only considering because of SCRA.

I have the amex plat schwab and gold card. I live in the city and use uber a ton also travel a bit for work so uber for business and hotels make this card a win for me. I'll continue to use my gold for restaurants and groceries however but it fits in nicely into my amex eco system 🙂

It’s a no brainer winner for me. Basically I’m going to get rid of our additional $75 CSR card for my wife, we get CLEAR anyway, so effective AF drops to $25 less than we were paying before, and we can now have the option of putting CSR-style category spend on Chase or AmEx to spread out our points in the two systems. It’s great to be able to book flights and hotels on OTAs like Hotel Tonight instead of the lackluster amextravel.

Even without the SUB this is a clear winner for us and gives us a lot more flexibility in being able to AmEx for our daily lives.

As I had already signed up for CLEAR (still in the trial), this card lined up very well for me. 45k intro, CLEAR from $109 to $9, and we do use lounges, so we'll see if that loungebuddy credit gets used. Basically, though, this will replace my CSR for the most part. My wife still has a CSR for when we need a Visa (which definitely happens)

The Green + Platinum Pairing

Just going to type up a quick excerpt on my plans with my current AMEX line-up based on where I see the most value.

After the launch of the new “revamped” green card, it seems like I’ll be cancelling my gold card next year before the annual fee hits. 4x on dining/supermarkets is lovely. Even though I use the $120 dining credit, the $100 airline incidental credit will be harder to use now that Delta Gift Cards are out of the equation.

When you consider the Green card’s 3x on Travel and Dining, do you REALLY notice a big difference between 3x and 4x? Let’s say you spend $5000 at restaurants a year. Can you really feel the difference between 20k MR points and 15k MR points? YMMV! 🙂

Anyways, like Sebs, I use my points to fly First/Business whenever I have the chance. The fancy perks that the Platinum offers combined w/ the every day multipliers of the Green card make a bit more sense to me personally.

In conclusion, Green > Gold.

Definitely getting the card! It’s already in the mail to me. 1st year is no-brainer for me at 45K points (or any of the offer levels), which I’ll use for transfer partners. I value all the non-SUB point extras at $25. I’ll use the Away credit, but value it at $0, as it only brings the suitcase down to a point where I’d be willing to buy it, not at full price. Will use the Clear in year 1, and value that at $25. For the two or three times I fly a year, I wouldn’t pay full United discounted Clear price of $109. After year 1, I’ll either cancel or see about a retention bonus.

I appreciate this calculator…I just renewed my green. Received 7500 mr after $1000 spend in 3 months since I can’t get luggage credit. I’d like to point out everybody won’t qualify for CSR or Platinum out the gate so it’s nice that this entry level charge card has decent multipliers.

Since this is a charge card it doesn't affect 5/24 right?

FYI, AMEX must be backed up getting new green cards out, as it is estimated that my card won’t arrive for 2 weeks from approval. Thought it would be overnighted like Platinum and Gold were, so I didn’t click on “get your card numbers now,” after being approved. This backfired, as I won’t be able to get a new Away suitcase before a trip coming up. AMEX customer service can’t give you the numbers, if u didn’t request at approval. Lesson learned.

Ideas:
Use away credit to subsidize a holiday gift for someone

Wish I could product change from my delta Amex into this card and just txf points to delta

Txf points to Hilton seems like a waste

Do you think the Gold Card will change the restaurant multiplier to a gas multiplier in the future to make all three charge cards work seamlessly together
