Is The Amex Business Platinum Really Worth $595? – Waller’s Wallet

by YouTube Team

The American Express Business Platinum is one of Amex most expensive travel cards costing $595 each year. But the Amex Business Platinum benefits include the $200 Dell credit, lounge benefits, a 35% rebate on airfare and others. And the 35% rebate is not a benefit we see on the Amex Platinum card, but even with all of these benefits, is the Amex Biz Platinum worth the annual fee?

Its only worth it for the lounges. If you fly twice a year its not worth it. So no for most people its not

I wouldn't get it if I intended on treating it like a personal card. For executives, sales consultants, or high-end lawyers who have a company partnership with 1 airline it is great.

For smaller businesses or part-time gigs, Amex BBP or CIP are the better choices for travel.

I have personal Amex platinum..as we have been getting $20 for wireless and streaming credit…
Is this credit going to continue in January too as travel is almost dead as corona cases and deaths are going through the roof?

I wouldn’t get the Bus. Plat but I will say that Amex Insider fares in my experience are a lot cheaper than any of the other portals. Don’t know if it’s a deal that Amex has ink’d with these carriers but in my experience I can always get a better fare in AA (my selected airline) on Insider Rates than any portal or even AA themselves.

I do have the Bus Gold and I love it and the 25% back is awesome not to mention the 4x on the category of my choosing.

Transfer partners are always my first go-to but not always are there award availability and even if so, sometimes you have to be willing to play “connections” game and my plans aren’t always flexible.

The Bus Plat. is a dud, I also think the personal Plat is a dud…shy of the 100k and 10x I would have NEVER gotten this card….and it’ll meet its untimely demise next year because I don’t care for it.

Great analysis Dustin and I agree with you on ever point of this overrated card.

This is probably the hardest card to justify if you have a "business". It's inferior to the personal card.

I have it, but won't renew it into year 3. We're expecting a big refund, plus want to keep in Amex's good graces after an 11 month closing. I like the Business Platinum more than the Personal, mainly for the 35%, but Schwab's 1.25 CCP beats both. I have way too much Amex spend for a couple flights a year, so cash is king. The Business Gold 25% discount will do.

Hi Dustin. Love the channel. Fellow PharmD in Florida. This card worked out great for me. Got it at the end of 2019, Had to replace a roof last year, so got the 100k bonus. Insurance sent me a check which I used to pay the contractors. Got all the 2020 covid incentives + 20k retention bonus, 7k in spend offer. Dell credit used for TurboTax & to replace 10+ year old computer. 200 dollar statement credit.

I think this card is for people whose company is paying for it…

Your shirt reminds me of a joke comic.

Woody walks in to find Bo Peep in bed with Buzz Lightyear. He asks her, "What's this?!"

She says, "You've got a friend in me."

Yeah I looked at the Amex Business Platinum and Gold recently because I'm trying to stay low on my 5/24 count. I was pretty disappointed to see the sign up bonuses were worse on the business cards than the personal cards and the credits were less useful. It's like the Amex business cards are the Island of Misfit Toys….they have been neglected and weren't enhanced like the Amex personal cards were during the 2020 pandemic.

I originally got this card when they had the wework benefit, ended up using the 35% back on booking economy tickets to Hawaii on United, found that it ended up costing fewer amex points using that 35% back than transfering to Singapore Airlines to book the same flight… The rate is actually better than the Sapphire Reserve, 1.54x redemption vs 1.5x on the Sapphire Reserve… But I agree, I wish that discount was up front and on all economy flights, any airline instead, like the Sapphire Reserve…

Another difference between the Personal vs Business is, the 5x bonus multiplier on airfare. On the Personal, the 5x multiplier works on booking *directly with airlines*, but on the Business Platinum, it only earns 5x points on *flights booked on the Amex Travel Portal*, not on flights booked directly with airlines… Thats a subtle difference but its actually important. I often use the Schwab for paying directly for miscellaneous airline expenses, for example if I am using partial gift cards booking with an airline, the balance I always use the Schwab Platinum. The Business Platinum doesnt get 5x on airlines, and I have never booked airfare with cash on the Amex travel portal, only points, so the Business Platinum's 5x on airfare multiplier feels useless to me…

For me, it wouldn't be worth it, but for the right person, it's totally worth it. I lean more towards the business Gold. Take care and keep the family safe Dustin!

I ASKED THAT QUESTION. I THINK WE ALL HAVE. IN MY OPINION IS TOO MUCH. HOWEVER I DONT TRAVEL LIKE EVER. SO HONESTLY I DONT KNOW WHY I HAVE THIS CARD. I MEAN IT DOES NOT ADD TO MY CREDIT AVAILABLE (overall)

The use case beyond year 1 seems to be 1.5x if you have purchases over $5K that make sense to put on a card, and your non-bonus category spend already exceeds the $50K bandwidth of the BBP + high-spend sweet spots of other cards + minimum spend for SUBs for a few new cards a year. But even then, there are other non-AmEx options yielding a higher effective % back (like Citi trifecta with transfer partners). Maybe the airline bonus is useful for someone not interested in transfer partners and OK with the limitations on it you reviewed.

For the most part I would say this is a pass for most people. This is a true business card intended for companies that regularly drops $5k+ at a time. If you are a contractor, retailer, or advertiser that regularly has large spends then you can definitely rack up some points. If you are just a travel hacker with a side "business" there is no way to get positive spend or even get the sign up bonus.

It's for sure worth it. You're picking it apart like it's a personal card. Use it for business book business flights with it get the 35% back and it's 100% worth it.

Just got a pre approval email for this card. Not sure why but my personal score is pretty good. 15k would be hard for me to spend in 3 months, but I’m definitely curious to see what limit they’d give me lol…

Just got approved, originally wanted the personal platinum but being I wanted to stay under chases 5/24 for the time being. I chose the business platinum card. Since it doesn’t show up in my personal credit. I justify the 15K spend on some taxes I owe and a down payment on a car. But I can’t see how it why I’d keep this after the first years intro bonus. Currently the bonus is at 120,000 pints
