by YouTube Team

The Chase Sapphire Preferred just increased it’s bonus to the highest we have ever seen it. And at the same time, Chase released the new Chase Freedom Flex with a large bonus as well. Since these offers are from the same bank and there is no end date, if you had to choose one of these reward credit card bonuses, which one is the better one?

Hey man this was a good video. I want to get the Preferred someday and downgrade it to one of the cards if I happen to have enough spending to hit the bonus someday rather it's with Plastiq or something to hit in the future and downgrade it to the the new one's sense you can only have one of each of thous and you can get the bonus every 4 years from what I hear.

I feel kind of bad for the CSP. It's like the "red headed step-child" of the CSR. It just doesn't make sense after year 1. My hope is that Chase will revamp the Sapphire series and make the CSP a complimentary card to the CSR so we can have both, rather than "only one sapphire". I'd love to see the CSP be the grocery, gas, home improvement card while the CSR is the de-facto travel, dining card.

Do you recommend waiting to see if Chase does something with the CSR before applying for the CSP?

Get this load “flex”
Chase says I get 0x points on taxi and no travel credit because I used some of the 300 on gas and grocery. Chase says you have to make up the difference before any points are earned. Seems super strange not to receive credit or any points. Must be chase sticking it to us or am I missing something?

Do you think it's smart to keep all 3 freedom cards since they have no AF?

Reply
Juan Alcantara September 17, 2020 - 1:05 am

I think you will get the Chase Sapphire Preferred bonus a lot faster than the flex bonus, 4000 overall over 12000 on grocery only sounds a lot better

If I downgrade from csp to flex how long do I need to wait to sign up for csp?

Thank you for this!! I have the CF CFU CSP and CIBC. You just confirmed my game plan. Going to pass on applying for the flex and just PC my CSP to the flex and then apply for the 80k bonus for the CSP again! Now will be holding all 5 cards with Chase! And may upgrade to CSR after 12 months:)

I would probably go for the Chase Sapphire Preferred bonus. You get the points faster and it's a bigger bonus. Thanks for clearing this one up Dustin. Take care and keep the family safe!

Chase bonuses are so easy just charge 4 grand to the card and refund it

If we have regular freedom do we need to wait to get flex to ensure getting the bonus? Is it 24 months?

Does it ever make sense to lower credit limits on existing chase cards before applying? Is there a certain percentage of your income that your chase cards can total?

Reply
BrooksyTech September 17, 2020 - 3:19 pm

Get the Sapphire Preferred first as 80k is amazing and lets be honest good chance the Sapphire cards are going to get some better features very soon. Then get the Flex in a couple months.

would you recommend downgrading my CSP to this card after the first year? not sure if I want to keep CSP anymore, my first year would be done in December. or maybe get this card now and downgrade CSP to freedom unlimited later? either way i think i’m done w/ CSP but it’s my only sapphire card so i don’t know if getting rid of it would have a great impact on my points.

I got the Freedom Unlimited and I'll keep it. In a few months, I'll get the CSP and never put a penny on it after the $4k for the bonus. They get a year to fix it, if not, I will dump it along with hundreds of others who will do the same. Groceries are an automatic sale. The $4k spend needs planning. Either way, in about a year I'll have a ton of points and either travel will make sense and I'll get the 1.25 bump or it won't and I drop the Preferred.

If I have a freedom and want to product change to the flex will this affect 5/24? So i have had my freedom for a year will that continue or will that reset that 5/24 space to 0 time? So in a year my freedom will drop off 5/24 will it still do this if I product change? I don't know it that question makes since.

What about the quarterly categories for CFF where you can get up to another $300?

Reply
Michael September 18, 2020 - 4:52 am

I upgraded my CSP to csr (due to TSa precheck being up and don’t have a card with that benefit made it worth it to upgrade for the year). Have had the CSR for 3 months now and two statement cycles but I didn’t get any fee adjustments other than removing part of $95 fee. Lucky with a chase mistake?

Hey.! I would like to apply for a chase card but I don't know if I should because I'm using 86% of my credit. My vantage score is 588 and my fico scores from my credit cards is over 660

The "1 Sapphire bonus per 48 months" limitation on the CSP is going to impact a lot of folks.

The Flex makes a great companion to Ink (CIP)/Sapphire cards.

Do you recommend me keeping my CSP and getting the flex? Then Transfer all the points i earn from the flex to the UR system to redeem for 25% more?

Great video as always, Dustin. Question, if one is already over 5/24, can one be added as AU to a chase card? Thanks.

Reply
sikesy7 September 29, 2020 - 5:11 am

One is a cash back card one is a travel card. Freedom can't transfer to travel partners without also owning a sapphire card

Reply
sikesy7 September 29, 2020 - 5:14 am

You're really missing the point . You need the sapphire card to actually transfer these points to travel partners. The freedom card by itself is just a cash back card. What good is the freedom card if you can't even transfer them. You need both.

The thing is, I have always been told by people who I take financial advice from to never cancel a line of credit (credit card). Not only because it has a negative impact on your credit score but also if someone is willing to extend a line of credit you should always keep it as a resource. So, I kind of feel like inherently in your argument of taking the more upfront bonuses on a card that will require you spend $4,000 in the 1st 90 days vs $500 to get the initial cash bonus (of course there is quite a reward variance but $200 is $200) and then also with the Sapphire Reserve you are also paying an annual fee. So for someone like me who does not cancel lines of credit, whenever the rewards are at least somewhat similar and there are some decent initial bonuses, then I personally see no reason not to take the no-fee card. The issue here is also what someones spending habits and income levels are, these are variables I think that must also be considered but I do agree that if you have the spending habits and with the cards able to change programs it is best to secure the rewards ASAP. Thanks for all the info…
