Honestly I have had this card for almost a year. to me I definitely want to keep it long term. They have helped me with a few purchases that I made online and have been able to help me when other cards would not.

Hi Ben! Regarding your comment about not having more than one Tier 4 card… I have the Platinum and Gold and want to get the Hilton Aspire… would that be too much/overlap? If it is, what hotel credit card (personal or business) do you suggest? Thanks!

Unless one is looking for a one card setup, the CSR is not competitive ever sense the venture x came out. I guess the exception is if you are a high spender that will not use transfer partners

Maybe up the base rate to 1.5x or 2x. If nothing else, increase the multiplier for dining and travel to 4x

it would be so very helpful if you included chapter tools or timestamps. 🙏

I have CSR, Amex Platinum and Venture X but I travel full time so I find that I can easily get the full value out of each, and they complement each other well. Definitely a case of YMMV, but for some, it will make sense. I like the different category multipliers and the $300 credits are super easy to justify at least CSR and Venture X.

I run the Venture X and CSP. Love it. Have access to a ton of transfer partners, visa infinite, the priority pass is excellent, EAF of $40. I don’t like juggling a ton of cards so this two card setup is perfect for me. Of course you can supplement with savor one and freedom flex as well.

I still confused on the chase dining. Like do you just book a reservation through chase portal then pay with your card when you go there. Some of them are prepaid pre selected menus and others are confusing.

where is online grocery in CSR that has 3 points in CSP ? that is a deal breaker because that is among the second or third high spend category

Reply
Stephen Sine June 22, 2022 - 11:54 pm

I feel like it's a scam to get gold hotel status and not being able to use them with the portal.

For me the CSP is a better fit because I don't travel enough to justify the CSR. But if I did travel a lot, I still don't think I would get the CSR. I would keep the CSP and add the VentureX. It would increase my travel partners and lounge access, and overall, I think it would be a less expensive and higher value setup because I don't think the CSR's credits are worth their value.

Hi Ben. 👋 Chase Dining is such a let down. Keyword to receive 10x is "Prepaid" and "Takeout". I made a few reservations months back and didn't see the additional 7x. Spoke with a Rep and they explained that to me that the reservation must be pre-paid or take out. Dining choices are limited for me… the prepaid options for those limited choices are even less! And who wants Takeout when the purpose of dining out is to do just that.

Didn’t it just have a 80,000 point offer within the last month?

I love this card! However, as someone who lives in Chicago, the lounge access isn’t all that useful. What would be amazing is if they do what Amex does with delta and allowed united club access when flying United as chase already has a credit card partnership with them…

These thumbnails always make me think you go on top of a mountain to ponder deeply, each time you decide if a credit card is worth it 😅

I don't see why people shit on capital one travel partners. I value avianca life miles and Qantas for domestic flights and Chase doesn't have either. I only want chase for southwest but I don't know what booking with miles with southwest looks like. With united it's so much you may as well pay cash

It's is with the chase trifecta and you use most your points for flights. I use mine for Hyatt so the preferred is what I have.

I've had the Reserve since the beginning. How likely would it be for me to get a retention offer if I tell them I want to downgrade? I don't intend to actually do it but if I can get something out of it then it might be worth it

I've been thinking about downgrading my csp and applying for the Reserve since it has been 48 months since my sub.

They definitely need to revamp it… Make more worthy of an Amex platinum competitor. Give access to United Club lounges, besides Priority Pass and Plaza Premium and eventually Sapphire lounges. Add more credits to offset annual fee. Add United and Marriott or IHG status/perks

I think for the hotel thing, its better to use for hotels that you don't care to have status or accruing points. Like most all-inclusive resorts in Riviera Maya, none of those hotel chains is worth membership (to me). 4 nights stay will go north of 1K. I don't go there often to justify accruing points with Riu, or Sandos, or Iberostar, etc.. and will never be able to get status for perks anyways. This is a good way to get Chase points for those type of reservations, I think.

I think the Sapphire Reserve can be a card that is worth it to some, especially if they love to stay within the Chase ecosystem. However, it is not intriguing enough to bring in a ton of new customers right now. If they increased the welcome bonus to be above the preferred or increased the earning rates then I think it would be a much more sought-after card. It's just a little too similar to the preferred right now and is a bit less competitive than other travel cards on the market right now for the same AF. Let's hope that changes though! Great video Ben!

Given the competition now I actually don't think the CSR is worth it anymore. I downgraded mine this year. For lounge access the Venture X beats the CSR at a much lower EAF, and if you want access to Chase partners the CSP gives you that while having the same welcome bonus and a much lower AF. And protip even though Venture X only gives you Hertz status, you can actually match President's Circle to National's Executive Elite (a tier higher than the status that comes with CSR and Amex Plat). The CSR value proposition just doesn't make sense to me anymore, especially since the multipliers have barely changed since its launch.

I was dead set on getting the CSP to complete my Chase Trifecta after having gotten the CFF at the end of January and the CFU at the end of February. Was going to wait a bit until I saw the sign-up bonus was 60k points which is the same as the CSP. Being military and getting annual fee and authorized user fees waived, it was a no brainer for me to go ahead and apply for the CSR over the CSP.

So when I spend 1.5x on CFU and transfer it to CSR then I can use it as 3% correct?

Reply
D Crasto June 23, 2022 - 9:41 am

I am in The Hague, Netherlands, and just used the CSR to buy a combo Döner meal after using the CSR to pay for my train from AMS.
The Primary Auto Coverage alone has saved me many thousands of dollars (in Turks and Caicos to mention one accidental memory).

CSR should be compared to AMEX Gold, not AMEX Plat. Even if you only rent cars, take LYFT/UBER/BOLT/GRAB, stay at hotels, pay for parking, etc. and never fly, your EAF is $250, requiring Zero effort. I dropped my AMEX Plat last year because the time and effort required to find "value" are not worth it to me.

Does the chase saphire reserve priority pass allow your immediate family access or is a family of 4 out of luck? I've seen mixed reviews.

So does the point multipliers work for the card perks. Like instead of 3x on dining it’s 4.5x or is it not applicable for that?

I would say that there is a case for having more than one tier 4 card especially in cases where they are loyalty cards in the first year. A perfect example is having a tier 4 airline card with intro bonus and a tier 4 hotel card with intro bonus. I got the brilliant toward the end of last year when it had that great bonus and I just got the skymiles reserve business with the great bonus. So flights and accomodations are both covered if you wanna yolo it. Now keeping them both past year one may be a different story lol
