I got two trips planned for October but I'm very wary on traveling now. I went ahead and booked my trip to Cabo while they are offering no penalties on changes but I don't see things getting any better and just worse with restrictions coming back again.

For sapphire reserve, is gas purchase still going to be credited first until the $300 annual travel credit is exhausted before starting getting any 5x?

If these benefits stick long term that would be awesome, especially if CSR and Freedom have different rotating categories because then you’d have so many categories for 5x.

Living in NYC, the CSP is the best card for everyday spend. I just upgraded from the CSP to the CSR, and the look on my face when my UR points went up … priceless lol

before buying anything through instacart just make sure that its price makes sense

for where i live (norcal but not bay area), instacart has a ~50-100% markup compared to the delivery services offered directly by safeway or walmart grocery.

I am coming to the end of my 5/24 on the freedom, unlimited and preferred. Do I need to downgrade so I can get another sign up bonus? Or is that not how that works?

Reply
Falco Peregrinus July 2, 2020 - 2:47 pm

Not using the CSR for gas because, although I'd love the 5x, I really need my travel credit for next year and I just got it back with my June statement. Please give people a warning in the next video, Sebby. The gas purchases will eat up the travel credit first and then folks will begin earning 5x back in the category.

I won't ever use Instacart because they pay their shoppers so horribly. I don't buy gas because I have an electric car and my Netflix bill is only $8 a month. What else you got Chase?

Do I have to sign up/enroll to receive the increase in points for the mentioned categories? I do not think I am getting the increase in points on my CSP when I pay for groceries.

This is great! Youtube TV is increasingly their base subscription cost so this may help with people keeping it for at least 3 more months. I won't be using this 10x category because my platinum card gives me $20 off that subscription.

This is why I have never been a fan of travel rewards cards and especially the ones you pay annual fees on (which is almost all of them)…because of times like this where miles/points are pretty much meaningless. Now imagine if you had a strong cashback setup, all of those pts/cashback would not be affected and actually benefit you if you are somehow tight with money due to the pandemic. For example, what do 100,000 Amex MR points do for someone today, or let alone this year? Now imagine it was 100,000 pts which was = $1,000 in cash that can be transferred to your bank account? I am not saying that there is no benefit to the travel pts/miles game, because those who have the patience and time can travel first class can get great bargains. (if you can find availability). Now instead of paying annual fee for those cards, take a look at my setup: Citi Costco Card (3% dining, 3% travel, 4% gas, 2% costco), Chase Freedom (5% amazon this quarter, 5% groceries last quarter, 5% gas beginning of this year), Discover It (5% paypal/restaurants this quarter, 5% gas last quarter, 5% groceries beginning of this year), and Citi Double Cash (2% everything). So far this year based on the amount I have spent on my cards and total cashback I have earned, I am earning an average of 3.2% across all my cards combined. Guess the total annual fees for all those cards? ZERO. And not only that, but it is cashback I can use for whatever I want, and not limited to airline miles or a hotel chain only. I have enough cashback earned this year to pay my mortgage in full this month, or I can book roundtrip flight for 2 to Bahamas and stay in Atlantis hotel for 4 nights for free. Also, best of all is I have the freedom to book whatever hotel and airline I want. I am not tied to specific airlines to use points/miles on, or specific hotel chains. Times are tough today, and cashback is the way to go, IMO.

3x on gas isn't very good. It should have been at least 4x. Just got an offer for 5x on utilities and insurance. That is huge. Chase is making sure that their Sapphire card holders keep their cards and don't downgrade or cancel.

The problem with Avios is the fuel surcharges and taxes. Yes it may be a low number of points, but the taxes and fees are almost as much as an economy ticket.
