NOTE: the Dell credit is a targeted offer, so there is a chance even if you have the Platinum, that you may not have it

Thanks Shifu. I have both the Platinum and old SPG card. It’s like you made this video specifically for me!

Can anyone give me details on the travel credit? Is it the same as the yearly travel credit?

Reply
Lew Piper August 3, 2020 - 8:12 pm

I thought Marriott was also pulling from your yearly property credit if you used your card at a restaurant as of a couple months ago. For this reason I have not used my Marriott card at restaurants. Did this end?

CAVEAT: You won't get the credit till end of Jan 2021. so you MUST keep the card open till then to get the 100. "The enrolled Card account must not be cancelled or past due to receive statement credit. Any benefit earned from this offer is in addition to the rewards (i.e. Membership Rewards or cash back) earned as part of your existing Card benefits, but your ability to earn spend-based rewards for the purchase will be based on the amount after any statement credit or other discount is applied. Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 90 days after 1/31/202"

Shifu, for travel rewards with no annual fee, which credit card would you recommend me to have? I already have Barclays with apple rewards, capital one silver, apple credit card, and wells fargo credit card.

Hey man I’ve got the AMEX Plat. Idk if I can call customer support about this, but this is from the black & white of the “Full Offer Terms” from the Dell credit — “Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 90 days after 1/31/2021, provided that American Express receives information from the merchant about your qualifying purchase.”

“Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 90 days after 1/31/2021, provided that American Express receives information from the merchant about your qualifying purchase.” Underneath the “Full Offer Terms” of the Dell $100 statement credit for the Amex Plat. I suggest calling customer support to see if this is true.

What do you mean by prepaid Amex travel? Is that just booking through the Amex travel portal like normal?

I wonder if you could show some strategy with the Marriott card extra bonuses to work with the transfer partners. For instance, Alaska airlines is a transfer partner at a 3 for 1 ratio, but when buying gas could be pretty lucrative for Alaska 🤔

So I spent over $27k on the Surpass and I am still $1,100 away from my free night. I messaged AMEX and they said some of my purchases didn't count. I said there was no way I spent over $14k on the type of purchases that were not qualifying. Like Gift cards and fees. Have you checked your spending or was it on point?

I also stayed at the Ritz GC. The hotel was nice but the Island was whack. Beautiful beaches and gorgeous weather but the culture of the island has been completely eliminated. Also, extremely overpriced at everything. My advice if you do go, go as a group so that all events can be divided up amongst you. I wasted 300k in point on that island. Bali is far better for couples also lots of culture.

There’s a 15% off Chevron gas stations offer on AMEX gold. Does that beat the 10x bonvoy pts back on gas with the AMEX bonvoy?

Will the Bonvoy offers be there if I apply brand-new?

Reply

Not bad offerings but I'd still rather have 4MR/$1 on dining and gas via my Business Gold (5x on dining if i use my Prestige) than 10x bonvoy points in either category. Currently I'm using the CSR on gas but will revert back to the BG once I max out the limit on that. I will however use my Bonvoy Business on my Marriott stays where I used to use just my CSR.

My friend said you would have to report the $100 dollar deal to the IRS and they would hit you with a tax, so the tablet would not be 2/3rds off. If this is not true please reply, this is my friends claim which I disagree with.

That is a great value for the Marriott cards. It's a shame that the Marriott points aren't worth as much as some of the others though. Still, I'm glad to see them continuing to make the cards worthwhile.

I do wish there was a comment up front about which country's credit card program is being discussed. That Marriott card looked a lot like Canada's, so I was hopeful the Platinum benefits were also Canadian.

SUGGESTION FOR TOPIC: Shifu, you are awesome! My daughter just graduated from HS, and I am adding her to one of my card accounts to start building her credit. I would love to see a "basics of credit cards" video designed for young people who don't know anything. I know I could compile a list of your videos for her to watch but I think a lot of parents would love to see a really comprehensive, dedicated video that they can force their kids to watch before handing over a card to them! Am I right people? I have searched the internet and oddly… can't find one. I think you would get a lot of likes/views and you would be performing a public service as only 17 states in the U.S. require high schools to teach financial literacy classes and only 7 require testing (!!).

My membership renewal is on March so when the $200 TCI came out I wasn’t between the beneficiaries, but now everybody is, but as today I’m not able to see such credit on my account, anybody else have the same issue? Or am I the only one?? 😕
