Hey Credit Warriors and we have some exciting news about the Chase Southwest credit cards both personal and business. They are now offering welcome bonuses of up to 100,000 points, plus increased point earning on the the cards, a new 5X category for the first four months. And we are also going to show you how these bonuses, could be transformed into a free companion pass, that means you get two seats for the price of one, for two years!! Yes you heard that correctly, two years. If you like the sound of that we upload videos on credit card and travel tips and tricks several times a week so please consider subscribing. Alright let’s get into the video.

There are three Southwest personal cards the Rapid Rewards Plus, Premier and Priority. From the lowest to the highest, they range in annual fee from $69, to $99 to $149 and obviously the benefits increase too. Now let’s just look at the most basic card, the Rapid Rewards Plus, since they all have the same bonus anyway – 80,000 points – which is their biggest offer ever. Now it is a two tiered bonus, you get 50,000 for spending $2000 in the first three months and then you get another 30,000 for spending $10,000 in the 9 months for a total of 80,000. But that 10,000 in spending will get you at least 10,000 points as well, so you have 90,000.

Why is this significant, well you see you only need 125,000 points to get a companion pass, and points earned from the Southwest credit card DO count towards that companion pass. Let me read out this description of the companion pass from Southwest’s website.

Companion Pass is the benefit that allows you to choose one person to fly with you, free of airline charges (does not include taxes and fees from $5.60 one-way) every time you purchase or redeem points for a flight. To qualify, simply fly 100 qualifying one-way flights or earn 125,000 qualifying points* in a calendar year, and you’ll earn Companion Pass for the following full calendar year, plus the remainder of the year in which you earned it.

So did I hear that right? You get to choose 1 person who can always fly at your side for free! Perfect for couples. But what is more, you get the companion pass for the rest of the calendar year in which you earned it, plus the whole calendar year after that. Well it is the end of 2020 now, so if you get this card now, you will probably earn the welcome bonus in January or February 2021. Then you have to do a bit more spending to get your points total up to 125,000, we will talk about some strategies for that in a minute, so stick around, but if you do that, you can get a companion pass in early 2021 and you will have that pass active until the end of 2022!!!!!

Do Southwest Cards count for the Chase 5/24 rule?

You're gonna have to blast those bonuses pretty fast to maximize. Gonna be really hard to get two full years unless you're able to put all the spend on both cards on Jan 1, 2021.

I try to only use my SWA points w/my companion. It doubles the point value. And an awesome benefit of booking with points is with SWA you never lose the points or “cash” you paid for the taxes. You can cancel your trip even as late as the day of your flight and 100% of points go back into your account. AND you will be given the option to refund the taxes you paid, or hold for future use (not sure why you would do the hold). Love me some SWA.

Unless I missed it mentioned in the video, the best strategy would be to get the first tier of rewards on both a personal and a business. That would be 127,000 points for $7000 in spend. Assuming you can be approved for both.

Is it possible to get the business card, do the $5,000 spend and then get the personal card and do the $3,000 spend to get the companion pass? That would be a minimum of 133,000 points for $8,000 spend.

Just a question…if you are an authorized user on someone else's southwest card can you get out of that and get your own card in order to get the sign up bonus?

So, presuming I could hit the minimum spend, I could get one personal and one business Southwest Card and get companion pass?

Reply

Problem is by the time you get enough points, assuming you do, it'd take a full year to get it. Meaning start in January, hit it in December, then you only get the CP for really 12 months.

Online it says that the companion pass is only for one year. Not sure if you meant to say get the companion pass for one year or two year in your video?

Reply
The Nativekind December 9, 2020 - 1:47 am

I'm thinking about applying. Question – Say it takes me all year (let's say before my December 2021 statement closes) to get to the 125K points and I don't earn the pass until January 2022. Will my Companion pass then be valid for 2022 and 2023 or just 1 year (2022)?
