Between the Gold Card, Business Gold, hotel branded, Costco, and BoA Cash, I am already doing well on travel and dining. Accasionally I take 3% in person or over the phone on travel, not much loss.

Green 3x general travel credit, gold 4x groceries and dining, platinum 5x airfare and hotel with travel insurance and lounge access. Trifecta!!!
Green card is targeting CSR. Same earning points, same categories and same annual fee after the CSR credit kicks in ofcourse

I just hope (with very limited optimism) that the expanded "travel" definition that's on the new Green card also gets applied to the Platinum card.

I agree Dustin. Scoop this one up for the bonus and then business as usual with the CSP.

I hate that the new Amex travel protection only works with round trip. Sometimes I’ll book and award out and revenue back in. CSP/CSR/Ritz is still a better option for me.

I was excited when this card was rumored for 4x on gas and an Amazon Prime membership. Now it is a big disappointment. It’s bonus categories overlap too much with their other cards. I’m sticking with the CSR on this one.

The Amex Gold still much better than the Revamp Green Card even with the 3x in travel. Great information Dustin, Thanks!

Honestly I don't get the hate for this card. Essentially it's a great companion card for the Platinum covering travel with 3x that the platinum card doesn't. Yeah it overlaps with the gold card with the dining category but let's be real the gold card sucks unless your putting tens of thousands of dollars on it for dining and grocery. Honestly a personal amex Trifecta would be the Platinum, green and edp. The gold card is the odd man out right now and should have gas added back to it like it was with PRG having it as a bonus category. That and add wholesale clubs for the 4x on grocery.

Great video Dustin. I personally think that AMEX has a mess on their hands of underwhelming but loaded with potential card options. This green card refresh could have been a homerun but unfortunately missed the landing spot. Maybe it's their intention. I'm not sure. Chase is still undoubtedly the value leader for most travelers while AMEX is something to seek for more niche aspirations.

So my question is: Amex Green (3x on travel) or Citi Premier (3x on travel including gas)?

Reply
jalabi99 October 25, 2019 - 1:14 am

I don't think it's that comparable to the Chase Sapphire Reserve. I will never sign up for Clear. There doesn't seem to be any downgrade path. So I won't be getting the Amex Green card, at least not until I finish my Chase trifecta. Best thing about the card is that it uses 75% plastic recycled from the ocean 🙂

GREAT VIDEO! This is a great breakdown of the AMEX GREEN CARD. I’m more focused on building the Chase CC strategy at this time and feel like there’s more value for our family with Chase and Cap1 at this time, but maybe in the future. No matter what card you have, you must ALWAYS have a budget, follow a budget, and make sure the Budget ALWAYS WINS. Great Video! 😎👍🏻

I don’t agree with your analysis. First, you can combine the United or Delta discount with this CLEAR credit. Becoming a Mileage Plus or SkyMiles member is free, and you can then also use the Green card to get the membership bringing the cost for CLEAR down to $19. But the main point is it effectively offsets the AF to $50, regardless. The other point you miss here is the 3x is not just on dining. It is 3x on a broad range of categories, the same as the Chase Sapphire Reserve. Transit, rideshare, and most importantly flights and hotels even when booked through an OTA. Not only this but you get the new AmEx flight delay protection on round trip flights. This is a huge change and it makes this card a great companion to the American Express Platinum card. Finally, yes, direct redemption isn’t valuable with this card but you can get 2x value per point with travel partners. For short haul domestic, Delta is a good option, for instance. It’s more difficult than travel portals but it’s still possible to get value with MR points. For me, this card is a huge benefit when combined with an AmEx Plat.

I also have the Chase system of cards so for me this opens up more earning potential within the Amex system.

Agree Business blue with no annual fee is a better option, but hey solid bonus. Maybe big City people with mass transit, Uber, eating out could take advantage of the dining and travel category regularly.

the fact that the new green card is very broad on travel they should make the platinum more broad like the CSR to keep it competitive also AMEX would make more money be it would attract a younger audience to get the platinum and more people would be looked into that annual fee.

it makes sense IDK why AMEX doesn't do this

If you get the 45k offer and you get the Away credit is worth to try, I think that the TSA pre check make more sense, 3 points is good that for sure what see happening is people getting the card and toasting the card within the second year

Another point is that Amex is an excellent card. Whiting USA I am currently in Italy ( Milan Torino Florence PiSA Lake Como). And it’s funny that only a 10 percent of the restaurant and shops with take Amex, actually in more than one occasion in places that accept Amex asked me if I have Visa ? They will look 👀 Amex like a desease Oh you have Amex. Nooo please stay away

If you are a Delta skymile member and currently have a delta credit card lined your sky miles account, Clear is only $109 as long as you have the a Delta card. You do not have to purchase Clear annually membership via a Delta a credit card. You can you purchase through the Green card, ultimately making clear $9 a year after the green card $100 bill credit. It's been confirmed. I did it.

If any one is planning to buy away luggage I have a referral code for an additional $20 off you order. With the $100 green card bill credit, you can get a total of $120 off away luggage.

I think that this card is a great first card. For an infrequent traveler this card is money especially compared to the CSP. You earn 3x on travel and dining. You get lounge access for the 1-2 times a year that you do travel, all the great amex purchase protections/benefits all for only $150/year. Come on…. for example the CSP only earns 2x on travel and dining and its costs $95… and you get no real benefits after that. The Green card actually allows you to get Clear (ok sure i'll have to spend $20 out of pocket… who cares) and lounge access for only $50 more and you're more rewards! If you don't care about Hyatt and redeeming through the portal then the Green card is your best choice. OK obviously the only major drawback is that its an AMEX card so acceptance can be an issue internationally.

I may be in the minority here but I think this will be a good card for me. I don’t have the csr or platinum (450-550 af) and this can get me access to a couple of lounges a year without paying that high af. Also the fact that you can get Mr points in broad categories is nice. I want the gold card but don’t use the Amex travel portal as much, probably won’t use the dining credit to the 3-4 spots that they have (and if I use grubhub, I’ll probably end up spending more money that I originally would’ve). I think this card is for the traveler that flies once or twice a year (like me)

Based upon the high 45,000 bonus, I was considering the green American Express card. If I can get it later, I might choose a different card.

I am looking to pick up 2 cards. I am considering Barclay's AA, BOA Premium Awards, Amex Green or Amex Business Gold

I got the Green a few days ago after considering the Gold and BonVoy Brilliant.
Incognito gave me the 45,000 point offer. Away credit is gone.
When will the Incognito loophole be removed?

A main driver for me was Lounge Buddy Access. Amex cards are now the only way to access Lounge Buddy. Any Amex, but this card has the $ 100 credit. Good point bonuses on virtually any travel category. I also have the Amex Delta, the 3% free Amex grocery card, and the no fee membership rewards cards.

As a retired infrequent traveler, paying $450 for a credit card with a Priority Pass lounge was no value to me. I cancelled CSR because in 2 years, I was never able to access a Priority Pass Lounge.

To me.
Fee. $150.
Lounge Credit value, $ 100.
Clear value, zero.
Ability to get 3 points per dollar, a god feature.

The Gold won’t get me into Lounges.
The Brilliant costs $ 450. Comes with many perks. I’d rather pay $ 300 less and not be committed to stay at Marriotts, even though I am Lifetime Titanium. Too many benefits have been removed by Marriott. Free breakfasts are a crap shoot.

The Gold would give me incremental value over my Amex free 3 cents on groceries, and three other cards that give me 3 cents per dollar on dining.
The airline credit is worth zero as I use Amex Delta, free baggage with priority boarding.
The requirement to designate the airline eliminates the opportunity to use it with a great fare on some random airline.

Finally.
Gold using incognito has a 50,000 bonus with a $ 4,000 spend.
Green, using incognito, has a 45,000 bonus with a much easier to reach $ 2000 spend.
Green also has an upgrade path to Gold, both being Membership Rewards charge cards.
I’ll stay with the Green. The Lounge Buddy is too important to me.

Good video. Just got approved for the Green card. I use AMEX BCP 6% groceries, Costco Visa 4% gas, AMEX Green Dining/travel, and Citi Double Cash 2% for all other spending. That being said, Green card has a broad 3x travel category. I wonder if that is a better route for purchasing Disney theme park tickets (e.g., Expedia, travel agency, through hotel) compared to going through Cap. One SAVOR’s 4% cash back on entertainment. I have Savor, but wonder if the 3x MR points are more valuable than the 4% or even Target’s 5% cash back on Disney tickets. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Run a comparison with the Wells Fargo Propel. Can't see any way the Green wins.
