Meal delivery services like Doordash, UberEats, and Grubhub are popular food delivery services that can be convenient. But that convenience can come at a price. And with travel credit cards benefits that offer credits for these services, people are looking for better ways to get value from their credits. These can include the Chase Sapphire Reserve Doordash partnership, or Amex UberEats partnering, and even the Amex Gold Dining credit to Seamless. These services can provide a great value, but are you overspending using them?

Wow that’s an amazing shirt!
I never use these apps.
That app would be so clutch! I am one of those people who will go through every app.
I lived in San Antonio for a few months for work. I went past Mi Tierra everyday and never ate there lol. Ever been to HotJoy?
As a restaurant owner, the applications don’t decide the price, the restaurant does. Restaurant owners/managers inflate prices to reduce the effective commission rate and to encourage customers to order directly instead.
I didn't know this! I looked it up on the restaurants that I just recently ordered thru Doordash, and the prices were slightly higher on Doordash from Portland OR. Thanks for the information Captain!
Has anyone noticed price fluctuations throughout the year for the same restaurant/service? Just curious.
Nice shirt. I thought you were wearing a backpack at first.
I haven’t tried any of these yet. Might be worth looking into since they can apparently be cheaper than direct with the restaurant. I typically have to stop at 2-3 places when we get take-out. Not going to spend 3 hours comparing prices and then 30 min picking up. The kids would eat me!!! Another extremely practical and well made video Dustin!
Great comparison!
Those restaurants that are cheaper through the app than direct order need better management. If I was an employee there I would be scared for my job.
Didn't know you used to live out here with us in NH.
Love your videos.. around me in central NJ there is major differences between restaurant direct and delivery services, almost always direct restaurant is cheaper. My guess is the services are 2% to 10% more expensive. It makes getting value from the amex dining credits hard unless you do your homework like you state. It seems larger restaurant chain's have the smaller mark up.
Awesome vid as always. Didn’t know there was so much variability. As noted totally sweet shirt.
I only buy from these services when there are coupons and usually do pickup combined with doordash/ubereats giftcards that I bought at discount
Thank you for the insight. A lot of people are unaware of the prices that are tacked on top of the regular prices when using these apps. Amex Plat and Gold card holders will use Uber Eats regardless of the slightly higher prices.
This video shocked me. These restaurants are eating a 25% fee….and it’s cheaper?!?!?
Does that price with Door Dash applied with Dash Pass or without in those situations?
I don't tip Uncle Sam.
Memphis!!!
i hate how restaurants mark up prices on uber eats to rip people off on it makes it hard to use uber eats credits
Lol. I have The Dashpass and The UberEats Pass to take care of the service fees and delivery fees. But I share my Doordash with my little bro, and he orders more than I do. Lol
D, u have to add the shield with u 🙂
You really need to price assuming you have a subscription because most have a subscription to at least one, and the subscription price is the same between the major delivery services.
I normally order directly from restaurants because of the higher prices on these apps but there are still some restaurants that don’t have an online ordering service or deliver so then I’ll use the apps. I normally look and see which method is cheapest but I’ve noticed in my area, Postmates is the most expensive method so that method is rarely used.
Doordash
You lost me at fried pickles 😂
mmmm Dumpling time is hella good!
I think it’s unrealistic & naive to expect to save money on food for a service that optimizes convenience.
I use them all depending on which restaurants are on specific apps. I probably spent about $1k on averaging a month on dining out. 😂
It's interesting that the costs are close between direct and through the apps for pickup. From my experience pickup is typically quite a bit more through the apps, but that's also might be because I'm doing so for more lower end places, like Chipotle and Taco Bell. I wonder if this is because there's more of an overhead for dine-in for these higher end places, so they're willing to not pass along the commission rate.
Good info here for my Amex platinum.
I'm still sweating a bit though about the UA Travelbank. I selected UA as my airline at 9pm PST last Saturday 12/12 and got the confirmation e-mail from Amex that UA was now my airline. I waited an hour, then spent $100 on the Travelbank. Still haven't gotten a credit though GULP
Wasn’t aware of how many discrepancies there are 😅 GREAT video man – appreciate all the research 👊
Since I’m currently using Amex credits I do notice Uber Eats have min 10% premium from the regular menu here in Los Angeles. But 20% off their gift card from Costco makes it a little better.
It cost $3-$4 more for delivery with uber eats even with the subscription. I just drive to pick up since it's close to where I live
20% tip for the driver. now thats impressive waller.
Is their anyway I can get the Citi dividend card?
Great content Dustin. Had a quick Question regarding Buy Now, Pay Later services like Afterpay. Can this strategically be used for churning multiple MSR cards, or are these services pure trash for churning?
$40 for fried pickles crew checking in!
The price inflation is minimal if you order pickup and not delivery with things like uber eats and grubhub
You are spot on and unfortunately, most bloggers/Youtubers do not mention these things.
In this virus time i barely eat out, i cook mostly everything i eat, saves me money
I like UberEats. I never broke down the price difference as good as this video, but I did notice it was cheaper than Doordash.
Also, as someone in the restaurant business, I'll have you know that we set the food prices consumers pay on the apps. It's more expensive in order to offset how much we pay to the delivery app. Sometimes, owners will even set some prices cheaper in order to drive up delivery sales. You see a cheap item so you get it, but people who order delivery are more likely to buy multiple items. Those other items are inflated so the restaurant comes out ahead from you being drawn in by the one cheap item. This ensures that we still come out profitable whether you order directly or not.
Obviously, there are still some risks of restaurants using delivery services. But again, at the end of the day, you're always going to pay a premium for a convenience to do less work yourself.
I could go on much longer about this topic as it hits close to home… lol
This video thumb catched my attention 😄. I have been doing kinda similar content and maybe you should check me out. I'm kinda sure you'll find see a lot of useful info on this topic on my channel too.
What about postmates ?
