As someone who spends 50 – 60K for bonus miles/MQMs, here's my numbers (long term strategy):

Old Business Platinum 50K spend = 70K miles X 1.3 Cents – $195 = $715
New Business Platinum 50K spend = 75K miles X 1.3 Cents – $250 = $725
Old Business Reserve 60K spend = 90K miles X 1.3 Cents – $450 = $720
New Business Reserve 60K spend = 60K miles X 1.3 Cents – $550 = $230

Add $200 to both Plats for the additional 10K in spend, and $X for the Reserve additional perks. I am fine with options 1-3, but #4 makes no sense to me. You are basically buying status with high opportunity cost.

In November 2018, I was approved for the Gold Delta SkyMiles 50,000 offer. Then Nov 2019 I upgraded to the Platinum Delta Skymiles im pleased with the change Delta is my preferred airline.

Upgrades are becoming harder to come by on Delta, especially with status match and miles upgrade options. First Class from Seattle to Anchorage was 1/3 empty on our Flight in January, so occasionally a Reserve holder with no status could benefit. Don't hold your breath though, I went 1 year at Platinum status, 6 flights holding the Reserve card, not one upgrade.
Lifetime offers are definitely not absolute, I got a targeted 20K MR points for opening a 2nd BBP, the first BBP only 6 months old.

Thanks. Initially I was interested in the platinum, but it seems like the gold might make better sense.

Hey Dustin. Does this card makes sense long term for the Platinum? If a family of 4 travels in the US r/t for $1600 on coach, it still won't add up with the annual companion ticket if you decide to 2 gamer the card because you'll still pay $500 on annual fee combined (not including taxes and fees). So, is that companion REALLY FREE or SUPER reduced? I think it is a wash and Amex makes it look like you are getting something when you're not. What's your thoughts (after year 2) for a family of 4.

I was going to hold off on applications and get that CSP later this year, but I ended up applying and getting approved for the Delta Platinum.

My wife and I have some domestic traveling to do and don’t mind flying basic economy, so with those 100,000 miles, we’re effectively getting three round-trip flights for two people for $500 (not counting free checked bags and the companion certificate). Will need to see how year three looks, but the first two years should be awesome value-wise!

Delta Gold looks like a keeper card from a cost/benefit standpoint.

– 1st checked bag free
– 2x Delta miles on dinning/groceries
– 2x Delta miles on all Delta website purchases (airfare/hotels/rental cars/cruises/travel insurance)
– Year one the annual fee is waived.

Dustin, since the companion ticket on the platinum is only for main cabin, Is it possible to book main cabin with the companion ticket and then use another Amex card’s airline credit to upgrade to comfort plus or first class?

Great details! I actually missed the the Gold AF being waived for the first year. This means I'll 100% get this card and keep it thru the renewa and then downgrade to the blue.

You're absolutely correct about the upgrades and being a YMMV, but doubtful. There are people getting the Reserve simply because if the upgrade. I had a long conversation with sometime with no Medallion status and they still argued they would get as many upgrades as those with medallion status. I did laugh. Most people don't mention it's going to be a rare occasion you get the upgrade.

If you're Delta DM or PM, the Platinum companion ticket is a free C+ ticket with the automatic upgrades. That's the one reason I keep the Platinum card.

Great video and explanation!!!

I think your valuation of 1.3c/SkyMile is more fair thank TPGs 1.2c/SkyMile. The value of these miles seem to be getting better.

I don't understand how Boston to San Francisco can cost 8,000 miles when they are only 2,700 miles apart.

Want does it take to qualify for a business card with AmEx? Typically, AmEx is more conservative than Chase. I have a business Spark card with CO, but don’t qualify for one with Chase, so am doubtful I’d qualify for one with AmEx. I could call AmEx and try to get a bus card, but don’t want to get a hard inquiry just to get denied in the end. ☹️

I’m so torn between the gold or platinum. I have a thing for metal cc and I know the cold isn’t metal but the platinum is. Help?

yeah, these two tiered bonuses are REALLY interesting… some math guys must have definitely cracked some kind of consumer code there that I am going to have to think about…

Delta Blue makes sense for students, as it’s a low spend requirement with no annual fee. The bonus makes sense for a vacation trip to a leisure destination like Vegas or Orlando.

I think platinum is much better than gold due to companion ticket is the deal breaker. It’s easy to cover the annual fee if you travel at least once from East to west coast per year. I do not think you get much value for gold for the 2nd year paying $99.

Quick question regarding platinum card holders, is anyone else currently unable to generate a referral link for theirs?

I like the new changes to the cards and the hike in annual fees surprisingly doesn't bother me too much. When you upgrade to the next card teir, is there always an upgrade offer? And is it as high as an offer with a new application? Solid breakdown of the new cards Dustin, take care and happy travels!

ha when you said you couldn't get this bonus again I was like * haha
btw do you think amex would get mad at me if I did this? I have a delta gold personal which af hit so will be canceling within 30 days. If I refer my mother so she can get business gold then I cancel my delta gold then she refers me so I get delta business gold? Also can you explain or do you have a video for the pay with miles?

Unrelated but I’ve had the Amex gold since last Jan and have a 75k Ofer for Amex Plat. Should I take it as I downgraded my CSR to a freedom and no longer have a premium travel card anymore and was looking to get Plat since their annual fees are the same. Halp!

What do you think is on the horizon for credit card offers? I’m ready for my next card, and was going to get the Delta Gold (already have Platinum). It’s 60k miles, but wasn’t sure if I should hold off and if offers will be going up after we all this Covid is over? Welcome everyone’s take.

Can you upgrade/downgrade on the Delta business cards like you can with the Hilton personal cards?

I used that link to see if I have any offers and this is the message I got…

To receive your Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card offer, you must verify your Amazon or Amazon subsidiary email address. 🤔
