Great job and wonderful presentation.
Cars today require very little in the way of "maintenance". Check the oil every month and change the oil once or twice a year. The TPMS will monitor the air pressure, but it's a good idea to check the tires monthly. That's it about it. The OEM brakes will normally last 20-30 thousand miles, so there's a small chance that a rental might get/need new brakes before it's sold. Other than that, bottom line is that it doesn't really matter where a nearly-new used car comes from. A used car is a used car, period.
Good info – I know they are great about maintenance. I am buying an MB from Enterprise and negotiating fees. They also say no haggle price. What is that? Thanks it was great
Most of the prices on these cars from Hertz say "No Haggle" giving the current state of the economy and the time crunch Hertz might be on to get rid of their cars, what are the odds of haggling a bit with a cash offer?
I was General Manager at a major rental car company at a major US city.. We did oil changes within our facility on 3rd shift. I couldn't figure out why my inventory of oil & filters were above, What I found out is that the staff never did the oil changes. They would just indicate it was completed on the computer, generate a sticker like it was done – put it inside the upper corner of windshield and done. Then they'd sell the filters on EBay and oil locally to small shops in the area. They's sleep in the Mini-Vans instead.
I have rented cars for 3 to 6 weeks a year for decades. I always drive carefully for fear of damaging the car and being assessed overpriced repairs. The idea that people are running rental cars into the ground, going up to 100mph in low gear, slamming brakes, etc. — well there are some idiots out there but is that how they like to waste their money? I bought a used Hertz car several years ago and was very pleased. Currently I am waiting for inflated used car prices to go down, but I have noticed Enterprise and Avis/Budget are far more overpriced currently than Hertz.
I only like, and only drive, cars with 5 speed manual transmissions. (There may be a few cars with 6 speed but generally it's 5). Of course I'd drive an automatic but wouldn't buy or own one. What are MY options in used rental cars.?
Just bought 2019 rogue with Heriz
Best experience I ever had. No haggle price. Warranty included with the purchase. I would recommend to purchase a used car rental.
I bought a Nissan Rogue 2018 from Hertz with 40,000 miles on it in 2019. I brought it to a mechanic and he stated that the car was in excellent shape. The price of the vehicle could not be compared to any other dealership. The no haggle pricing was excellent. Most of these vehicles were priced $3.000.00 higher at other dealerships. Why negotiate when the price of the vehicle is priced alot lower. I would buy from a rental car company for my next purchase hands down.
Buy a family sedan. I have bought three all have lasted 10 years. Current one is 18 years old. Check for accident repair. And buy from a name brand.
Great info!
I bought a 2017 car from hertz about 2 years ago, so after a couple of days later i realized one of the ac vent was broken that they fix it for me,but after a couple of months when started rain there was big leakage in the trunk,so i called them if they can help me, they just totally ignored me. So make sure you check every little things.
I bought a rental in 2002…still driving it currently 201,100 miles on it.
Mandy, the detail that you put into this video was not only fresh and new, but so detailed that it made me feel so much better about purchasing a rental car. Besides the price of the car, do you know what other fees are charged?
My Experience with Hertz Car Sales was not so good-
I was interested in a vehicle that was on their website. Arrived and was told the vehicle was not there, but needed to be detailed first. The next day I was notified that it would be available to be viewed in a couple of days. Came back three days later. Still not there. Then I got a call saying the vehicle is there, but has not been detailed. I can view it knowing that it will get cleaned-up. Wow, I looked at it and it was in terrible condition. Why would they let a potential buyer look at a vehicle in this condition? It literally looked like somebody drove it for months and beat it up. Rims were scratched terribly on all four. Drinking cups and trash everywhere inside. Broken handles and knobs. Just a filthy mess.
It now confirms what others told me about rental cars. They are treated like they don't care .Because it's not their car.
I ended-up buying the same model. One owner. And about 10,000 less miles. With every available option. Beautifully maintained. Free CarFax report. Warranty. And a lot less money. Just very happy I looked elsewhere.
Just my opinion. I would never buy a rental car after seeing the lack of care that this rental car went though.
Michael
Everything here is correct
I had exactly the same myths about used rental cars that you mentioned (and busted), that's very helpful, thanks!
Bought one. Really liked it. Kept up with the maintenance. Plan on doing it again if hertz survives long enough.
I actually still own the rental car I got from CarMax while I was waiting for the original car I had bought to get fixed up. Long story short, the CarMax rental car I ended up buying is still going strong, and I’m happy I ended up buying it than the car I initially came in to buy lol.
I bought a used Lincoln 10 years ago from Enterprise in Philly and still have it the salesman offered to change the front seats even though they were fine the car was detailed in and out and I drove the car for two weeks before they asked me to finalize the paperwork in ten years I have paid less than 600.00 dollars in repairs. I plan to buy a used Cadillac next.
Asked for rent-a-car quote for a week compared to enterprise. Hertz is by far the worst customer service call I've been on in my entire life. Transferred to 4 different departments. Lied to by agents having a bad day. Swearing on the phone. Just a sad company, broken. Truly.
Personal car ownership is becoming a thing of the past or it should be. Countries like the US and the EU nations should lease cars to people at reasonable rates and convert fleets over time to E-vehicles and start recycling cars older than 5 years. Automobiles should be looked at as a public utility.
Good information Mandy, Thank you.
Get a mechanical inspection, before purchase
Very informative! I purchased a 2016 Chrysler 300 back in 2017 that was originally owned by Avis – I found this out only when I went to deal with the SiriusXM subscription, and put it into my name! The car had less than 7500 miles on it when I bought it. Today, it still has less than 40K on it, and it's been a fantastic car that I use primary for the highway. I'd do it all over again if I needed to, without any hesitation. I really appreciate your insights into the various agencies, and how they generally keep the best cars for themselves – thanks again 🙂
