What about the people that have paid off their loans. I got sick 6 years ago and Nelnet is still dogging my credit. Student loan servicer vendors are evil.

My plan is to continue paying on my students loans because for the 6 months of deferment all the payment is going toward the principal.

So one thing not covered by this video is that Federal Loans that are past due are being marked as current and the payment suspension goes until September. I had 2 loans that were 30 days past due, and saw this happened.

I have Navient and they have not stopped calling me to make a payment, two calls already today. They offer deferment but interest still accrues and you have to sign up and wait. I've read in many places that if it's a federal loan (which it is) my payments should be suspended automatically. Navient does not give that option. They do have a Covid-19 page, but it reroutes you various unhelpful pages all saying similar things. So, despite it fitting into all of the 'correct' scenarios to defer, it is not 'no interest', not automatic, and not suspended.

Edit: To those who may say "I signed on for it", you're right, I did. I signed on for a specific interest amount with a specific company (Nelnet), not for my loan to be sold to a predatory company who is known for mishandling of debts. I'm fine with paying for my loan at the amount I signed on for. I'm fine with not having my loan forgiven or suspended payments during this…however, I only owed $15,000 and still owe $8,000 despite paying more than minimum on time, every month for 15 years. To those with Navient be careful assuming Covid will catch you a break at this time: it's not automatic, it's not suspended, and there will still be interest.

To all you people who think 'we' who have student loans and cannot afford to pay them and are 'childish;…YOU DON'T KNOW MY LIFE OR THE OTHERS. So I suggest you shut your mouth. There are all kinds of situations that people have that [prevent] them from WORKING and PAYING off student loans. Until you all know what someones life is like…your ignorant comments are mute and offensive.

If a federal student loan payment was deducted starting from March 13 till when the stimulus bill came into place on April 1st, call fedloan to ask for that March refund. If you do not contact them for a refund, they will not give it to you automatically. And it still counts toward your payment month tally. Refund will take 2-6 weeks to occur.

If you have ffelp or Perkins loans that have been sold from Dept education, this does not apply. At least that’s what navient tells me

with whom did you refinance your student loans? what rate did you get? did you refi federal or private?

Reply
Sam Leonard April 14, 2020 - 8:23 pm

if you have accrued interest it will capitalize at the end of the forebearance period of 6 months. this could be serious if you have tens of thousand of accrued interest since you currently pay no interest on accrued interest

They need to reconnect with AES; American Education Services, they have not suspended theirs, although Navient has. I know I belong to both in terms of payments.

I have a student loan wage garnishment, they were taking about $200 per paycheck. I never got a notice in the mail, but I just checked my pay stub (payday is tomorrow) and noticed it's a bit more than normal. Looked closer and yup – no garnishment taken! I plan to use this money, and my stimulus that I just got, to finally fix the holes in my floors and fix my bathroom shower/tub that's about to fall through the floor! Yay!

I owe $10k in student loans and once they froze student loans my credit score dropped 94 points!! I was happy to see that i dont have to pay till sept 30th but with that $1200 i was given ima pay some of it. Well at lease the interest. I don’t have a real job but i have uber eats and i make really good money in my area so itll allow me to save up for my own car and pay off some of my loan. Sadly i wont be able to move out if things don’t get better at lease i have some income flowing.
