Spend $15K on Hyatt Visa = 3 free nights per year up to Cat. 4. NICE 💥😎💥

I think there is a lot of value in both… Personally as a Hilton Aspire member, I have never thought of it as a card I can use for a daily spend but none the less it does offer great benefits and protections 🔥 Happy First of November

Even on Sunday, Waller does not rest. Fire content per his usual! Thanks good sir.

You make a good case!

In the first year of holding the Hyatt card, it makes more sense to go for that free night. After meeting the minimum spend of $6,000, you are only 9k away from that certificate instead of 15k.

Chrono.Anachronist November 1, 2020 - 4:29 pm

Yep, the math checks out here which is why I went for the similar 15k certificate on my Amex Hilton Biz card. (And I value Hilton points even lower than Waller, at like .4 cents/point). But if you know you can hit the 15k and can get use out of the certificate it makes sense to use the card as your "baseline" card up until earning the certificate.

Oliver N November 1, 2020 - 4:35 pm

This is useful only for a very limited time.

IF you can manage to hit the 15k in 2020, the Hilton certificate night is fantastic. 2 year validity & can be used on any night.

Don’t forget Hyatt changed the $15k spend requirement to calendar year instead of cardmember year starting in 2021. But if you have the card in 2020 you can still get the cardmember year certificate one more time

Can you earn the free night certificate for EACH $15,000 you spend per year or can you only earn it ONCE per year?

Do you think Hyatt will ever release a no annual fee card or a premium ($450 annual fee) card?

Reply
SolidLiquidFox November 1, 2020 - 5:00 pm

Currently on year 1, so yeah, its worth it to get the extra night by going from 6K required spend for signup bonus to the 15k for the extra night.

Yes! I’m going for the Hilton Honors AND the Hilton Aspire card

Spot on. The World of Hyatt card is a much better product than the CSP: almost the same travel protection and multiplier. Unlike the CSP, the AF is easily offset by the free certificate plus an extra one at 15k spend a year. A very solid product and possibly the best first card with AF and a long time keeper.

Can't agree more on Hilton Surpass. An extremely under-appreciated card given the Aspire. Gas, grocery, restaurants are the categories that most people would actually spend money on on a daily/weekly basis. Also Hilton Gold status and 10 PPS visits alone should more than justify the $95 fee, even for occasional travelers. However, for 2020/2021 I think it's very risky to invest on hotel cards especially with Amex/Chase giving historically high offers, free nights, bonus points and even Marriott Platinum Elite status. These points are bound to devalue when everyone has a ton of them.

So by this logic, UR points need to be worth more than 2cpp since they are 1:1 transferable to Hyatt but have more flexibility so I assume that those are preferable. But I see we are assigning 1.5cpp to Amex MR points which have far better transfer partners. Interested in the logic in that.

With the looming 2021 Hyatt devaluation I don't know if I'd want to stockpile Hyatt points at all. While these cards can exceed 2cpp in value, hotels play games far too much with the valuation of their points and categories. I think the transferrable currency cards (BBP & DoubleCash for my situation) are just a much better play as I have a lot more flexibility as it relates to redeeming and making sure that I consistently get at or above 2cpp. Not to mention that I don't have to travel to some crazy part of the world or seek out the most expensive property just to get the 2cpp.

I exceed 2cpp easily by moving MR to BA and flying domestic FC on AA. Don't have think about it or plan it…2+cpp redeemed in such manner is very consistent. But I do agree with Dustin, you have to apply this against your own use case and as he always says, run the numbers.

Great video as it causes one to rethink the usual suspects for daily drivers.

You probably can't name a better Gas/Grocery/Restaurant card in terms of multiplier then the Surpass. I've been rocking it for little while primarily, until I went for the aspire as well. I have to say, Aspire is a another monster. (platinum status gave me a basic 2 twin into a 2 king deluxe, just for calling in a couple times). If you can stomach the 450$, it pays for itself almost directly.

The Sapphire Preferred has incredible Auto Insurance. To my knowledge, it's the only Primary rental car insurance in a sub 100$ card. This is the only reason I keep it, Pay your entire rental car with your sapphire :), deny the rest.

I agree, Hyatt spend value is overlooked, as well as Surpass. I value Hyatt more because I stay at mid-tier properties, would use them most often before a cruise, which could land mid-week. Also, Hyatt's first free night more than cancels the annual fee. Wish list for 2021!

I love Hilton Surpass, but I think given the current environment, it’s risky to invest in one specific reward currency. I think UR and MR points are safer since I think specific airlines and hotels are in danger financially

Would consider this if I was traveling in a Hilton or Hyatt property in 2020 or 2021. But as this uncertain I will rather take 2% cashback or two MR points.

I’m stuck between strictly using Hyatt card to hit the $15k extra free night or just stick with chase UR points with the flexibility. I think once I see I can’t hit the $15k I’ll stick to chase rewards and just transfer points over when needed.

The only converse I can see to this argument are threefold.

1. For spend in any Chase category with a Sapphire card, it makes more sense to get the 3% points, then use those points to turn into Hyatt points ($0.02/point) with Sapphire, because you'd be getting an effective 6% back, which beats back the ~4% on the World of Hyatt spend.

2. You lose flexibility by locking in. If something happens, or a better offer comes in, etc. You are reliant on nothing going wrong or better

3. 15k spend in a non-category is a tall order. Even with most of my bills on credit card, the rest of my spend has a dedicated card. Considering 60-75k/year salary we're talking 1/4 to 1/5 of people's income needing to be spent.

That being said when travel is safe again, I'm picking up this card for my belated honeymoon. 3k of Hyatt Property stay on a Hyatt Credit Card = Buttload of points. $95/year is basically a break even or profit on a room, and then a second night in points, and I'd have weekend hotels paid for $95/year for quite a few years if I stick to say tier 2 hotels. But I'm not going to fight to put 15k of spend on here when I can buy better flexibility for $1-200 left on the table.

I have thought about earning the certificate. Every time I start I seem to get a new card with a new signup bonus. Maybe next year, a good way to get a lot and get under 5/24

Haha…pretty smart. I'm to the point now with a good rotation of cards that I don't have an average of $288.47/week going on my non-bonus spend card (to make up the $15k/year).

Oliver N November 17, 2020 - 3:09 am

The free night after 15k of spend is moving from card member year to calendar year. The transition rules are interesting. You could earn 2 nights with 30k spend. You can earn 1 night between now and your anniversary night in 2021 and a second between the 2021 anniversary night and year end 2021. In 2022, you will receive a free night if you spend $15k between Jan 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022.

The gap in rewards between Surpass and Aspire is too small for me to justify the extra annual fee. Surpass is the way to go for me.

Is there a easier way to get the status up faster for Hyatt? Thinking about applying. I’m still confused if the status stays lifetime or u have to hit the same spend every year to maintain.
