Hey credit warriors, welcome to the show and if you have the Chase Freedom Flex or the older Chase freedom card, or are thinking about getting a freedom Flex card for yourself, you will be interested in what we are going to cover in this video. Because Chase just announced the new 5% cash back categories for the second quarter of 2022.
Before we start this video, don’t forget for this month you can get up to 12 free stocks when you open a new brokerage account with the zero commission investing app webull, and that is for depositing any amount of money, even like $5. Link below, I’ll tell you more at the end of the video.
So the Chase freedom Flex and the older freedom which is no longer available to new customers but many people still have, earn 5% cash back in rotating categories, that change each quarter. There is a spending cap of $1500 and then it goes down to 1%. But that is still an additional $75 or 7500 points you can earn in the categories. Before we show you what they will be changing to on May 1st, let’s just remind you of the categories for quarter 1, incase you haven’t maxed them out yet, you still have two weeks.
So for quarter 1 the 5% categories are, grocery stores excluding walmart, target and fitness clubs and gym memberships. You can see on one of my freedom cards I am about 60, maybe 65% of the way through the $1500 spending cap, so I will definitely make a few more trips to shop rite before the end of March and see if I can max it out. On my other freedom card, yes I have two, I haven’t spent anything in the categories.
And yeah, you can have more than one freedom, I got my second one through downgrade from the sapphire reserve. Actually I used to have three, so that would be $4500 I could earn 5% back on each quarter, or $225 in cash back slash 22,500 points. But I never even came close to maxing the categories out, so i canceled the freedom flex to free up credit with Chase so they would approve me for a new card, and now I am left with two freedoms and a $3000 quarterly spending allowance and I still haven’t maxed that out either.
But anyway, let’s actually reveal the categories for quarter two of 2023 and they are:
Amazon dot com and Lowes
Now I think these categories could be amazing for some people and kind of meh to others. I order a lot from Amazon so I will switch my payment method to the freedom. I do have the amazon credit card from chase too, but I would prefer to earn points rather than cash back, they are pretty much double as valuable to me. But if you are on team cash back and you already have the Amazon prime visa which also earns 5% at Amazon, you are just going to be like meh.
Then for Lowes, the reason that is a category is we are coming into spring and this is typically when people start doing home improvement projects as the weather gets better. For example buying a new grill, or building a new deck in the backyard ready for summer.
So let me know what you think of those categories in the comments below. Don’t forget you still have two weeks to max out grocery stores and gym memberships. Also you do need to activate the categories for the next quarter so you should receive an email tomorrow about it, you can also activate them in your online account starting tomorrow February 15th and if you use any Chase ATM you will probably see a prompt on screen to activate them too.
Thanks for watching, don’t forget to get your 12 free stocks from webull, valued between $34 and $30,000, luck of the draw what you get, link below. Please subscriber to the channel if you are new and we will see you next time. Bye.

It would be great if you could double dip the 5% by buying Amazon gift cards at Lowe's.
I work at lowes so instead of getting sodas from the break room vending machine I’ll have to get them off the floor 😂
Can you buy gift cards at grocery stores and that will count for the 5% currently?
I’m out of the game.
I've been spoiled by the 5% on groceries the last 6 months. Definitely going to need to get a good grocery card now.
Can't go wrong with Amazon.
Wish Home Depot was there too
if you shop at Lowe's a lot, you can get 5% discount at the register if you get the Lowe's business amex, in addition to points.
It's always a category that I already get 3-5% on other cards. When are they going to choose a useful category like "marijuana" so I can actually max this out?
I knew this was going to be some chase freedom flex clickbait. 😂
They’re rotating categories to get people that have go to’s for different purchases to get in the habit of using that card. If I change my Amazon parameters it might wind up being left like that until I’m reminded of a better offer. Citi custom cash seem to be a bit more user friendly in that area. 5% back you choose the category. For example groceries or gas. Unless I’m mistaken in which case the correction would be most welcome.
Lowe’s has a lot of giftcards.
👍
As a current renter, Lowe's is basically useless to me. Plus it kind of demonstrates Chase being stingy. Instead of just doing all home improvement stores like they have in the past, it's only good for one. Amazon is okay but we'll probably have a few hundred in spend in these Q2 categories if we're lucky. Nowhere near as useful as groceries or gas. IMO they should leave Amazon for a Q4 category.
Amazon also sells gift cards btw.
Why would I use this on Amazon instead of my amazon card??
Lowe's should be a pretty decent bonus category since Spring time is a good time to get some new tools. Home Improvement Stores would have made more sense than just having it as Lowe's.
Team Cash Back here. My Chase Freedom cards will be staying in my sock drawer for another quarter. Looking forward to Discover's 2Q categories.
Unfortunately, these categories do nothing for me. I have Lowe's store card and get 5% off the purchase and the Amazon store card to get 5% to apply towards future purchases.
complete dud again
Your source for finding out the categories early has always been reliable. Thanks Ben!
Ben as a guy that's only concerned with cashback and getting actual money from my cards…. and as an owner of the Amazon card… MEH. Next quarter they'll announce that water is wet.
I'm at 6/24, so I definitely need to wait at LEAST a year for the Freedom Flex (last card in the trifecta that I need). However, this is a weak Q2 lineup since I already have the Amazon Prime Visa and I could theoretically get 5% back on Home Improvement through the Citi Custom Cash. Even if I had the card, this would still be weak, tbh. The Discover It categories for Q2 are MUCH better this time around with Restaurants and Wholesale Clubs!
Amazon and Lowes is definitely the weakest quarter between chase freedom flex and discover it. Q2 for the chase freedom flex would have been way better if it was the same as Q4 for discover with the 5% on amazon and apple pay.
meh – have the Lowes card that already gives me 5% discount
Please do a video on casino credit cards
A bit disappointing for me since I have the Amazon Prime card, but I will use the CFF because I like UR points. A broader category like Home Improvement would have been better than Lowes. I wonder how much Lowes agreed to pay them for this promotion. It's probably a competitive move on Lowes' part to steal some sales from Home Depot.
Home Depot > Lowe’s
🙌🙌 I have some home project in mind this spring! Perfect timing CHASE 👏👏
Absolute trash, I was waiting for the new categories on the flex before I applied and now I can just wait a bit longer. I already have the amex prime card and my Amazon gift card wallet already has a bunch of money in it. I wish they would have done something like gas, Walmart or something more difficult to get
