Walked through Tropicana last year, what a turd…. implode it and put something that that is more updated and modern.
The South end is desperate need of a refresh.

I was at the implosion of the Dunes. I got out there very early and was as close to it as you could be — kitty corner at Flamingo and the Strip — without being a VIP. You need to go see one. This one set the bar for implosions and they’ve only gotten better since then.

A few things about the Dunes: the owner had neglected the hotel and casino for years. Before the implosion, they were selling everything and anything they could from the hotel. So I went to go see what the “high roller” suites looked like. They still had that old ‘70’s shag carpet in it. Nothing had been upgraded in years.

There was a golf course that ran the entire length of the property, behind the hotel and casino, right next to Interstate 15. The owner was an avid golfer and put all of his money into the golf course, which was beautiful, but a complete waste of such valuable land…

Which is why Belagio was able to build a much larger hotel and casino on the same land, even with the huge fountains in front. That golf course took up so much land, that place was just aching to be redeveloped.

I’m a huge fan of the old, classic, Vegas. But even me, being the old fuddy-duddy that I am, have to give credit to Steve Wynn (despite his personal mistakes) for the imagination and vision that he had. We have a much better hotel and casino now, which brings far more entertainment and fun to the Las Vegas Strip than the Dunes could ever hope to do.

Hey Shawn – Back in the day did the Tropicana have an acrobat type show along the domed ceiling?

Thanks for the updates. Sad to see so many iconic places being torn down. I know it's inevitable, but it's still kind of sad. Keep up the good work. Stay safe.

(1/2) During our first trip to Las Vegas in 1991, we stayed at the Tropicana, Caesars and the Dunes, where we were married. We stayed at the Trop for a renuptial and a few times after that. We always liked the pool and the vibe there, and after the Miami-style renovation, it was nice.

(2/2) However, if you read current trip reports, the concensus is that, with the sale imminent, Trop's former owners allowed it to become a dump, staffed by unmotivated, disgruntled employees. Moreover, when new management took over, it announced it would NOT be spending any money fixing it up for the time being, meaning that it will likely to degenerate until they decide what to do once they tear it down.

They should implode The Tropicana and put in a baseball field with fake turf.

Alan Zarek October 4, 2022 - 8:36 pm

Bally’s has indicated its not going to do anything significant to the property for 18 to 24 months.

The Tropicana name remains for now

Vegas was my favorite entertainment destination 1981-2008 (100+ visits) Made one last trip in 2010. Everything that made it special for me is gone. I can gamble with lousy odds and eat overpriced food anywhere. Don’t need to fly to Vegas to do it. Off shore Sports Books scratch the sports gambling itch.

I remember going from Frontier casino to Tropicana casino just to get a free watch as a souvenir! Good old days!

I stayed at the Trop just over 5 years ago. I wasn't very impressed with any of the food options. The gambling was meh and the hotel was also meh. Hope they give it a makeover.

Fremont needs multiple cannabis lounges. Staying in "ashtrayed" 1970s rooms is not the answer. Shame the cannabis consumers at the smokers pole if you must.

Tropicana is the cleanest, and well kept casino on the strip. Smells very nice. No cockroaches like Excalibur across the street.

Bally’s was very aggressive the last 3 years in acquiring properties across the country. The portfolio is ok, with one Goliath in Hard Rock Biloxi and a few market leaders (I.e. Dover Downs, the two in Rhode Island). IF (and it’s a big if) they continue the Harrah’s strategy of acquisition, the next step is to create a unified players club, which right now they don’t have. If they accomplish this, and make the comps/rewards slightly better than the general Caesars offerings, I think they could be a huge player in 5-10 years. I’m disappointed how slow the they are moving now, but it’s probably low priority for them. As far as Trop, I doubt they sell the land as that doesn’t feel like how they are moving.

I’m glad you’ll have two shows a week. Coming out at the end of October and always like to get the latest news from you guys. Will be in Detroit in 3 weeks too

Trop is going to be torn down, that's my bet. Now can they stop talking about messing with Flamingo? Can we have one old time casino? I'm not ready for Flamingo to change and certainly not be torn down!

I agree that Tropicana Casino Hotel needs to be up dated but it would be great if they kept the name and build a NEW Tropicana Hotel with spectacular waterfalls and exotic animals…..make it really tropical safari

Sad to see Tropicana go. I've been staying there for almost 40years. Amazing memories. Got married at the island of Las Vegas Tropicana. Yes the pool was cold , but very beautiful. Heating would be good. Beautiful bungalow suites. Hope they keep the theme.

Le Reve was my favorite, saw it 3 times. The athletics, set designs, and costumes were amazing! I recommend Mystere for CDS newbies. It provides all-around entertaiment. I was fortunate to go on a behind the scenes tour of Mystere for locals about 15 years ago- that was amazing too!

It would be cool for Bally’s to retain the Tropicana brand due to its obvious history. Lived in Vegas in 1980 and the Trop back then had the feel of a locals casino today without the community center vibe. They had a lounge act back in the day called “The Brothers Revue” which was a spot-on Blues Brothers take complete with a tall and lanky brother and a short heavy one. Brief case with the handcuffs too. Very entertaining!

Both Excalibur and Luxor should be imploded and replaced with a massive Fitness/Sports, Hotel and Casino Resort. Imagine a giant domed complex with a cross-fit centers that could fit 5000 individuals working on advanced, state of the art equipment; water sports complex for indoor surfing, kayaking, scuba and swimming; running surfaces with tracks for both sprinting and semi long distances; rock features for both trad and sport climbing; the largest X games and e-sport venues and multiple-run ski slopes that would rival Dubai Ski. Of course, all those would have to be designed so that they all integrate to create an all-you-can-do exclusive resort with the casino and hotel. They should hold regular competitions and bill it as the world's premiere sporting site, where Olympic athletes could even train. I'd build it if I have Bezos or Musk money.
