It's always important to bring that Visa card along with your Amex cards while traveling internationally! While in Mexico, I was trying to hit my Amex Gold SUB but most everywhere besides the hotel didn't take Amex. The Chase Sapphire Preferred came in clutch though! Thanks for sharing this one Ben. Definitely a solid travel setup!

CapitalOne SavorOne is a strong competitor to Citi Premier: 3x on dining, groceries and entertainment globally, with no foreign txn fee and annual fee! Besides that, it comes with 2 years of free UberOne membership (5% off rides and no delivery fees) and 10x on uber rides/eats; good complement to VentureX’s 2x overall and with which 10x becomes 10 capitalone miles

How about City cash, can it be used for gas or supermarkets outside of the US? Actually not sure if it changes foreign transaction fees.

Do categories work overseas?

Best card for international travel is US bank altitude Reserve.. reason it does not have foreign transaction fees and also gives you three percent (4.5 % if redeemed for travel) on all mobile wallet purchases.. by the way, that includes Apple pay and Google pay/ wallet. So when you are traveling overseas you make up to 4.5% on every place you use your phone to pay… Amazing! Because overseas in Europe everywhere they accept mobile wallet

SavorOne is a good no-foreign transaction fee alternative to the Citi Premier for use while traveling, but with no annual fee. Same multipliers on dining and supermarket, but swaps gas for entertainment like theatre tickets, concerts, clubs and events promoters, and cinemas. Events spaces are tricky because it’s hard to know whether they’ll code as dining or entertainment; this catches both. Categories are recognized abroad.

Probably a controversial opinion but as someone who has two personal platinums, the CSR, the Altitude Reserve, and the Venture X, The Amex Platinum is not for the international traveler. Most of the credits have nothing to do with travel and as you mentioned the ecosystem and multipliers are domestic focused. I travel 6-8+ times per year internationally and 3 or 4 times domestically and having used all of 4 of these major cards, I cannot honestly say the Platinum is a serious travel card outside the United States.

Ben you can use your Amex Platinum Hertz Presidential Circle status to status match with other rental car companies. You can get both National Emerald Elite and Enterprise Platinum Tier.

on sleek it said "up to 2% cashback" but i don't see a break down of what earns a plat "2% cashback"? it only said "up to 2% cashback". That's very concerning.

I never thought of this having cards only to take for international travel should look into that with my cards for that whenever I plan for a international travel

You definitely should have brought the Chase Ink Preferred to use it for your car rental and take advantage of its primary auto coverage outside the US. You don't have to charge the car on the Platinum to take advantage of the National status. And you'd earn more points too 👍

Sadly fee free overseas use on the Amex Platinum card seems only to apply to US cards. Here in the UK there are charges of "2.99% of the amount after we’ve converted a
transaction into Pounds Sterling" for all Platinum expenditure overseas.

You need to get yourself the Amazon Prime Visa! No FTFs, no AF, it's a Visa, and they have been doing excellent quarterly targeted bonus categories. Last quarter it was 5% on restaurants, this quarter it's 10% on gas!
