LOL, what an intro – first 150 comments 😁😁
I’m totally burning my Marriott points and affiliations. This will also make the Amex Platinum for Gold status less valuable. I hate that they think this is a great idea given what everyone has tolerated through the pandemic. Clearly they don’t care about rewarding anyone so they can burn and die.
Okay, so I'm not panicking, and not burning all my points before this starts. I read a recent viewpoint on flyer talk that presented this in a different way. It seems that if you travel in peak times, you may get hammered on points, but I tend to try and travel off-peak already and this new program tied to occupancy may actually benefit off peak travel. It does seem to limit what your point redemption will be worth and almost tying it to the daily price.Too soon to tell but I don't think the sky is falling, not yet…….
Marriott continues to live up to their loyalty program's namesake! They continue to say, "Bon Voyage" to their loyal customers!!
AA switching back to a simplified program is funny. The industry moved away to simple point grabbing because people were doing simple mileage runs to get status. Now that people are just starting to come back flying, they need to entice business travel again! Still will not rely on AA for to much, their operational reliability is nothing compared to Delta's. AA is just convenient for the moment.
think it would be better to transfer the bonvoy points to airlines with this change?
Would it make sense to get the Marriot card just for the free night still and status? I have the United Qust card (have a family, wife is Mexican so we def do one trip to mexico a year to visit family so this pays for itself with the 4 bags plus 125 credit), just got the Chase Flex, plan to get one of the Sapphires (I have two big trips planned for next year so leaning on Reserve for the lounge access) and then was thinking about the Bon Voy (but I am just new to the Chase 5/24). I only have room for 2 more under 5/24.
I have the Bonvoy Bold for more than 24 months, can I get the Bonvoy Boundless with SUB or is it one card at a time?
I was about to get the Bonvoy Brilliant for that 85K certificate & the points. Thought this card would be a keeper card alongside my Hilton Aspire & Hyatt but now I'm reconcidering adding it at all. Stuff like this makes me think again whether there'd be any value in the longrun. At least my Aspire card is giving me diamond status which is higher than what my platinum card is offering. This card isn't even giving you platinum status to make it have any value beyond what the platinum is offering. smh…
I'm not worried about the Marriott program myself, but then again I'm definitely not the aspirational travel kind of guy so I think I'll get similar value after than I am getting now, and with "it can be whatever" pricing, maybe some nice properties will dip to 35k for a certificate use. Got the Boundless approval pending – waiting for a letter – so I guess I'll try to play it safe and burn as many points as possible if they finally approve me eventually.
But, how on earth did you get 700k Bonvoy points? It's not like their cards are daily drivers or anything. Very curious.
Thanks very helpful
This is not even a slight surprise. Bonvoy has been saying FU to members for a long time, terrible customer service, etc. They're making a bet a lot of people won't care, but I think long term this will turn out to be a terrible move.
Hyatt all the way, man. At least until they decide to make this bean counter move. But I think Hyatt's program drives a lot of Hyatt business; they've made a different ROI calculation.
hahahahahaha. Cancelled two amex bonvoy cards 3 weeks ago. The 35k annual certificate was becoming useless. And new applicants had 50k certificates. They didn't even upgrade old holders. they grandfathered us into a shitty deal
Hotel points are the worst absolutely no value
Got the Chase Bonvoy Boundless a few months ago. With the intro bonus got 3 Free Nights at Conrad Midtown NYC. Thanks Sebby! Love the videos!
why your video keep zooming in and out.. it is really distracting I can't focus..
At 4/24 and got denied for the chase ink business cash don’t know what card to get from chase, I got the unlimited and the flex by far already got the bonus from the sapphire preferred
Something positive about the AAdvantage changes I think were not caught was the lack of award chart devaluation in 2022.
To dispel the rumors, Samp continued, “This is our program for next year. We still have the same MileSAAver, AAnytime, Web Special fares, those are all still out there… This is the change for the 2022 program,” referring to the elite status adjustments.
As a result, I'm burning my United miles first since they are pretty close to dynamic at this point and keeping both my transferable and AA miles for trips to Asia when it hopefully opens up next year more fully.
I've already dropped Marriott in favor of Hilton and Wyndham, too many devaluations already. I found it difficult to redeem at .08 cpp on standard stays, and don't expect that to improve here. I'm going to transfer 5K MR to top off my account at 17,500, and cash out a final redemption next month. Hotels will be my new booking site for Bonvoy, should I need to.
So I was interested in the Aviator red card with 60,000 miles sign up. So do you think it's still a good idea? I already have 130K miles already.
Might as well just cancel my Marriott and any airline cards, ain’t doing much flying anyway and using cash back a lot more. Ben getting a lot of value out of those cards since this Chinese virus started.
I was already thinking of leaving Marriott for Hyatt, this may have been the nail in the coffin for me. Also the charts for AA are WAY too high. 125k for Plat Pro and 200k for EP? They are 25k-50k over what they should be. Now actual flyers can't reach any status.
Marriot has a history of screwing over their card holders. "Don't get Bonvoy'ed!"
According to Wikipedia (so grain of salt) Marriott has 8,484 total properties so 3% is roughly 250-ish properties. Ritz-Carlton (108), St Regis (53) and The Luxury Collection (118) make up 3.3% of their portfolio. I forgot about The Luxury Collection initially but I think they would be part of it.
Why do you add a letter "s" to the word "aircraft"? Its plural and singular as is.
I signed up for the Chase Bonvoy Boundless card 3 months ago since the annual free night certificate (up to 35k points) made it a keeper card, but I may end up having to product change to the no-AF card because it's going to be hard to find a place to actually redeem the certificates if they don't update the benefit to reflect the new dynamic pricing structure
This makes Capital One travel reimbursement cards more attractive.
Sebby, what is your Lifetime status in the Bonvoy program? My LT Plat status has removed some of the pressure on me to maintain loyalty to Marriott. So, because some of my favorite Marriott properties are likely to be affected by this change, I am going to try to redeem a chunk of points ASAP and continue to de-emphasize my spending on my Chase Marriott cards.
For those don’t understand why Bonvoy is going to be useless… for example, why book a 35k property that cost $100 /night. That’s 0.2 cents per point when the same property would only cost 6700 UR chase points with the chase sapphire reserve. Not to mention Chase had multipliers so that spending $2300 on the chase reserve in dining would afford you that $100 night. With Marriott, you literally have to spend $35000 to get the same value…. 🤦🏻♂️
As a Japan-based expat, this Marriott Bonvoy devaluation will heavily affect hotels and Elite members here in Tokyo. Right now, since Covid started to calm down, all Marriott properties are getting back to pre-Covid rates, so using points may look like an option (although, I still want to save my points, so it's a hard decision to make). Also, bare in mind they extended status for members who got status on 2019 and 2020, so the ones getting "betrayed" are people like myself who just got Platinum Elite status and above this year. Now, I'm looking to get Titanium Elite, due to the potential large volume of Platinum Elites until January 2023 (meaning less upgrades opportunities, and less likely to have the 4pm late check out becoming more of a luxury than guarantee). Unfortunately, as I said pre-Covid rates are expensive and options are limited, therefore getting Titanium Elite now seems like a mission impossible. It seems like I'm going to look for Hyatt alternatives as well, since I'm just a night short of Globalist.
Well done! Good content and to the point. I usually stay at Hilton and have points but it was not available. I stayed at a Courtyard by Marriot and was disappointed. The room was fine but no frig, had to ask for additional tea since we were there a couple of days, only one ice machine (that may have been because of covid) but no sign or notice. The price per room was just under the Hilton that was sold out. The Hilton room and amenities were much nicer.
